Really really sorry to have been out of touch for the last 12 years or so – but there has been a context, and my sincerest apologies. Have just returned to social media / linkedin / facebook (the 2017 half-marathon photos were NOT posted by me, but by the oganisers!), so will be happy to be in touch regularly henceforth Meanwhile, just saw all ur family snaps, and awesome, machan (hope i can continue to be “personal”). Do take care, and shall speak to you one of these days. As i said, “I am back” This is Sathish here. Myself and my wife Rajani had met you about July 2nd week regarding renovation for our newly purchased house – 150A – Adarsh Vista, alongwith Archana, at the cafeteria. We had concluded the order and also paid Livspace a token advance of Rs 1.5 lakhs. Post the same, Ms Archana and Ms Salma (contractor) have been working with us to close out on the 3D drawings, renderings etc. We have also had a few sittings, both at ur office, at the site and over conference calls. Our concern now is that the project is getting a bit delayed. We are on Sept 10th and still at the drawing stage. We were hoping to move in by Oct-end atleast, but we are missing a few timelines, perhaps because of work pressure at your team’s side etc. I am traveling shortly, and would be very grateful if you could possibly step in, and expedite the following : 1- finalisation of the 3D rendering and signoff therein 2- cost estimation (rough), to help us be prepared on the commercials. Thanks again for your help, and hope that the team fast-tracks the project accordingly. Unable to reach Archana on phone (switched off) and hence my mail. Of this, medical is 150 and nonmedical is 15. Of the 150 medical, 135 is insurer share and 15 is self. So, we need to pay 17 plus 15, which is 32k. Of this, already paid 5k at admission. I am delighted to recommend S Niharika, Class 12 student of my school NPS Indiranagar. She has been with the school since her kindergarten. Though I have not taught her in class during her years, I am fairly familiar with her accomplishments. We teachers have always considered her as a consistently bright student who brings in a lot of sincerity to both her academic and extracurricular endeavours.

I vividly remember my colleagues commenting about her positivity and calm energy which she brings to the class. With a serious and attentive disposition, she has been a model student who asks the right questions. Her exam results have also been constantly impressive, with generally good marks in all subjects. She has of course, stood out in English, through her primary and secondary school, and won many laurels at national level writing events etc. She has transitioned nicely into the science stream the last two years. I understand that thanks to her passion as well as exposure (from her parents in particular), she is focussed on engineering studies and in particular computer science. This is evident from her active participation in coding events like “Technovation”.

She has also been a regular participant in most cultural events. We have seen her wonderful performances, both in solo music events and in the school choir, through the years. She has also been active in volunteering during our cul-fests, assuming leadership roles during house-tasks like waste collection etc.

A personal incident comes to mind – as organiser one particular year for our writing competition titled “Charche-pe-Charcha”, I needed a skilful writer for a particular topic at the last minute. Niharika’s English teacher instantly recommended her name, and the child worked overtime under tremendous stress to submit her entry, and it turned out to be a huge hit ! This episode alone is enough testimony to her quick skills, dedication and ability to deliver under pressure.

Niharika conveys an impression among the entire faculty as a level-headed, and solid student resource. She also blends well with her class-mates and is quietly popular and helpful among her friends circle. I believe that she possesses a good combination for a college entrant. Having seen her blossom and grow up through the years as a girl with a well-rounded personality with a flair for both algorithms and art, I highly recommend her candidature to your college.

For Sayantan : Repeating my points in summary : 1. The plot/ground 100X is to be maintained/cleaned etc by both the units (as occupants) themselves, since they occupy and use the entire place (for car park, rest area etc etc) and came in as tenants on that assumption. Landlord neither lives there nor uses the place, so he will not pay for the same. 2. Till July 31 2019, landlord used to pay 17600 yearly for 100X to the Association. Now, 17600/(12*2) = Rs 734 monthly per tenant. So landlord collected one consolidated amount from the tenant as rent, but for sake of transparency, has also informed tenant informally, “hey, ur rent of Y which u are paying me also includes a component of 750 which i am paying to association”. 3. From Aug 1, 2019, landlord asked tenants to directly pay the association. He reduced 750 from the consolidated rent as a result, from each tenant. He also settled his dues with association till July 31, 2019 in FULL, AND AS PER THE CALCULATIONS IN POINT 2 (FROM INCEPTION). ——– Dear Sayantan Dada – let me offer u something interesting ! I am really bewildered by the various set of numbers provided by Shashi mam from time to time! Pl sit for sometime with a calculator and then when we meet, pl prove to me that i have collected in excess, or have been unethical. If you can do that, *i will waive off the entire collection amount from you on Nov 13. It is my penalty for having been unethical ! So you will really get a good incentive/benefit!!! This process of u doing this simple maths will also help you in understanding the payment to association, as a tenant*. If, on the other hand, if you are not able to prove to me, sad for you. *You will be losing the decent incentive that i am offering !* ———- For Shashi mam : Dear Shashi Mam, I sincerely apologise if i have collected any extra sum from you (by wrongly claiming to you that it has to be paid to the association). Pl once again accept my apologies for my bad ethics. I will try my best to correct myself for my future tenants. You may please calculate the sum that i have cheated you with, and deduct the same from me when you pay me rent on Nov 13, 2019. As already informed to you, I wish to terminate our rental agreement with your unit MGAF. Please treat this as my 2nd formal termination notice after yesterday. Though the notice period is one month, for your convenience, pl choose any date from Dec 10 2019 to Feb 14, 2019 as your date of departure. Pl inform me your exact departure date when i meet you on Wed, 13 Nov 2019, since i need to plan to be in bengaluru on that date for suitable handover/takeover (as u know, i am planning quite a bit of travelling). Pl also be rest assured that i shall settle your deposit dues after adjustments the same day of your departure, and without any delay whatsover. I wish you and family all the best in your future endeavours. PS – you had wanted my copy of the rental agreement. Since i am not mobile and am at home, it shall be difficult (till Nov-end 2019) to sift through my documents and retrieve it for you (since everything is in my office). However, if you cannot wait till Nov-end, you may always keep a Rs 500 stamp paper ready, which you can again take printout of the format, and give me on Nov 13. I will pay for all incidental expense incurred at ur end – travel to estamp office, estamp itself, printing costs etc.

ELSE, there is always English. whether u are in raichur, raebareilly, rajasthan, raipur, rajkot, rewa, russia, Rwanda or Rio Di Generio, we can always communicate with each other in English !

எங்கள் தாய்மொழி தமிழுக்கு ஈடா, வேறு மொழி ஏதும் இருந்தா எடுத்துட்டு வாடா

Once again we reiterate, our mother ( mother tongue) is unequal to none

இந்தி தெரியாது போடா ..போடா..போடா………

HTP

விஞ்ஞானம் கற்றோம், மெய்ஞ்ஞானம் கற்றோம்….

Thamizh has not handicapped us in any way. We acquired knowledge through our mother tongue. We are as adept as the world in matters of science, matters of philosophy

விஞ்ஞானம் கற்றோம், மெய்ஞ்ஞானம் கற்றோம்.
(repeat)

மானுடம் வாழ்ந்திட மருத்துவம் கற்றோம்

We learnt medicine, both the traditional and the “English” varieties

இயல் இசை கற்றோம், நாடகம் கற்றோம்,

We mastered music, we excelled in arts and drama. And note – our entertainment industry is on par with the world’s best !

இன்பங்கள் பொங்கிடும் இல்லறம் கற்றோம்

We bloomed alongwith our Thamizh brethen, amidst the beautiful domesticity. We lived ( and live) as one happy, cohesive family

ஆயக்கலைகளை கற்றோம், எங்கள் முன்னோர்கள் சொன்னார்கள் பாடங்கள் கற்றோம்

We conquered all life-skills, we preserved the great teachings of our ancestors

வீரமரபினைப் பெற்றோம், எங்கள் வீட்டையும் நாட்டையும் காத்திடக் கற்றோம்

Remember – Many among us attained martyrdom towards our Indian nation, the “Bhaaratham” that we believe in. So, let me reiterate that we guarded our homes and our country as much as we guarded our language. And we identify ourselves as true Indians ( but NOT at the cost of our identity as Thamizhans)

பஞ்சம் பசி போக்கக் கற்றோம், நாங்கள் உயிர்களை நேசிக்கும் அன்பினைப் பெற்றோம்

In the 1960s Tamilnadu was at the bottom of the heap. From then on, it has been an upward climb. TN rose well, to alleviate poverty. We made TN a “most developed state” in per capita GDP. we taught everyone to love all living beings without hatred and without splitting them into various religions

அந்நிய படை ஏதும் வந்தால், நம் பாரதம் காத்திடும் தேசியம் கற்றோம்…..

We contributed hugely towards guarding India and its territories. Right from the time of Subhash Chandra Bose’s army all the way to the Thamizh Thambis and the Madras Sappers, we have always been there, guarding our country that is India

இந்தி மாலும் நஹி ஜாவோ, நீ தமிழ் மொழி படிச்சிட்டு தமிழ்நாடு ஆவோ
இந்தி மாலும் நஹி ஜாவோ

Gindi maalum nagi. Now, if u wanna live in TN ( for the long-term) , u better learn our language, else, sorry, we DO NOT appreciate it

குச் குச் குச் குச் ஹோதாஹே, என் தமிழ்மொழி உனக்கு தாத்தா ஹை
எங்கள் தமிழ்மொழி உனக்கு தாத்தா…

Kuch kuch hota hai ( not that we understand what it means), but we are using the movie name as a meme to stress that our language, perhaps is the grand-dad to most other languages

தமக்கொரு மொழி நமக்கொரு மொழி இருக்கட்டும் போடா

Live and let live, folks. IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND the logic of the 2-language formula ???? We keep our language and you keep yours. Peace out. We always have English to work as a bridge between us. (Or are u saying that we phase out English completely ??). If so, WILL YOU ? WILL YOU THROW AWAY ENGLISH, DEARIES ?

So, you want to have your cake and eat it too ? You want to retain English for yourself, and you want US to learn your language for YOUR convenience when you come to visit us or interact with us !!!

இந்த இருமொழிக் கொள்கையை தெரிஞ்சிட்டு வாடா

Pl understand where we are coming from. We have followed a Two-language policy ( and philosophy) for the last 70 years. Do try to understand our clarity with this simple analogy :

A man had two dogs – a big one and a small one. He wanted his dogs to go in and out of the house freely without him having to keep the house door open all the time. So he built two “trap doors” – one big trap door for the big dog and one small for the small dog. Neighbors who saw these two doors laughed at him and called him an idiot. Why put a big door and a small door? All that was needed was the big door. Both the big and the small dog could use it! Indian government’s arguments for making Hindi the official or link language of India are as ridiculous as the need for a big door and a small door for the big dog and the small dog. Indian government agrees that English is needed for communication with the world, and every school in India teaches English after the fifth grade. Then the Indian government says that all of us should know Hindi also in order to communicate amongst ourselves within India. I ask, “Since every school in India teaches English, why can’t it be our link language? Why do Tamils have to study English for communication with the world and Hindi for communications within India? Do we need a big door for the big dog and a small door for the small dog? I say, let the small dog use the big door too!”

பொழைக்கத்தான் வந்தியா பொழைச்சிட்டுப் போடா

You came to TN to earn your living. By all means you are welcome, but for YOUR convenience and comfort, pl dont expect us to learn your tongue.

என்மொழி மேல கைவச்சா சுளுக்கெடுப் போண்டா

But instead, if you needle the status-quo, then you’ve had it. We are known to be a very hospitable people, but if you attempt to disturb our mother ( Thamizh), we will blast you. Do not try to utter nonsense that Gindi is the friend of all other indian languages etc. Tell me – how it is a friend in the first place ? What has Gindi done for Thamizh, as a a friend ? Do not point to Kashi Thamizh Sangam. Tell me what the outcome is. How has it even helped Thamizh in UP ? Do not parrot the word Sengol. How does it matter ?

கும்மி அடி பெண்ணே கும்மி அடி, குழவைச் சத்தம் போட்டு கும்மி அடி

Rejoice and celebrate, my friends, all of us are brethren, after all

பெண்ணின் பெருமைச் சொல்லி கும்மி அடி

Praise thy women, praise thy mother, praise thy mother-tongue

நம் அன்பின் மரபைச் சொல்லி கும்மி அடி

Sing lores about the famed Thamizh hospitality

மத்தளம் மத்தளம் கொட்டு, நீ மள்ளாடும் படையைத் திரட்டு

Hey dear Thamizha ( Thamizh bro/sis), please gather our fellow Thamizhs to come together to protest

வந்தேறி பாஷையை வெரட்டு,அந்த ஆடவன் தலையில் தட்டு

Please ask the alien tongue to go away, gently tap the alien to understand our point of view

கும்மி அடி பெண்ணே கும்மி அடி,உறுமி மேளம் கொட்டி கும்மி அடி

But we wanna do this gently, we dont want violence. So lets keep celebrating

விரும்பி பாடம் படி கும்மி அடி நீ அறிவிப் போலப் பொங்கி கும்மி அடி

But hang on. We are MOST MOST happy to learn another language out of our own volition and wish

இங்கு வந்தவன் போனவன் சேர்ப்பான் அவன் பேசுறப் பாசையைத் திணிப்பான்

‘Cos we’ve seen it all over thousands of years. Every conquerer/dominating clan will come and try to impose their language on us. We have seen it all !

நம்மத் தாய்மொழி மதிப்பக் கொறச்சு, நம் தமிழ் மண்ண ஆள நெனைப்பான்

This fellow will try to rule us by belittling our Thamizh and thrusting forth his language. He may not say so explicitly, but that is what it finally is. Why do we need to allocate mental bandwidth / memory for a third language which has no use for us ?

கும்மி அடி பெண்ணே கும்மி அடி, தமிழின் வீரம் சொல்லி கும்மி அடி

Go forth and spread the word, dear woman. Spread the glory of our mother Thamizh

அவனவன் மொழியில் அறிவை வழங்கடா, அடுத்தவன் மொழியப் புரிஞ்சு மதிங்கடா

Hey, by all means pl use your own language and evolve, get smart, develop yourself. But do NOT lay your hands on my tongue. Respect me and respect my desire to not be IMPOSED with your tongue.

அந்நிய பாஷையில் எப்படி ஜெயிப்ப, தாய்மொழி மறந்து என்னத்தக் கிழிப்பை

For me, every other Indian tongue is Alien. Yes, English is alien too. I have accepted English, since there is no way out and it is the world’s most widespread language. And lets admit it – you have also done the same. But why should i accord that same status to any other Indian language ? Other than English and Thamizh, why should i spend my limited bandwith and brain power and time and resources and teachers and classroom time on something else ( of which i have no use for now) ? I would rather spend that on Maths, Sciences, History/Geography, coding etc, right ?

இந்தியப் படிச்சவன் சாக்லேட்டு விக்கிறான், தமிழில் படிச்சவன் சட்டலைட் அனுப்புறான்

We do not want to demean your language, but you are forcing this barb. The Hindi-speaker in my state sells chocolate and pani-puri. The Tamil medium fellow who works in your state launches satellites. The same guy in the international arena runs google.

கும்மி அடி பெண்ணே கும்மி அடி, தமிழின் மரபைச் சொல்லி கும்மி அடி

So again, dear sister, spread the word of Thamizh’s greatness. HOWEVER….

தேவைப் பட்டா நாங்கள் பிரெஞ்சு படிப்போம்,

Of course we will learn French if the need arises (We have a huge Thamizh diaspora in France speaking fluent French, by the way). Do you know that Thamizh is the official language in a few other countries in the world ? Do you know that Thamizh has a huge international presence – across Europe, In South Africa, even as far as Fiji

தேவைப் பட்டா நாங்கள் ஜெர்மன் படிப்போம்

தேவைப் பட்டா நாங்கள் பஞ்சாபி படிப்போம்

And yes, we will happily learn Punjabi if the need arises !

பெங்காலி படிப்போம் இந்தியும் படிப்போம்

Yes, Bengali too. And OF COURSE, we will learn Hindi ( out of our volition, repeat). And we have lakhs and lakhs of Hindi-speaking Thamizhians throughout all parts of India, in case you didnt know !

கட்டாய படுத்திப் படிக்கச் சொன்னா தூக்கி எறிவோம் ..தூக்கி எறிவோம்

But brother, if you TRY to impose, we will kick you out and and beat the hell out of you

இந்தி தெரியாது போடா, .. போடா ..போடா..போடா

So, again, we dont know Hindi. Kindly leave.

நீ அறிஞ்சிட்டு புரிஞ்சிட்டு வாடா,

Please introspect, internalise, understand, and then come. We will warmly welcome you

title for 1st essay – From Art to Algorithm – my awakening through “Technovation”

title for 2nd essay –

The incident which showed the “timid” girl what she was actually made of !

As I rush down the school ground, in a desperate attempt to reach my classroom in
time, I pass the primary building and hear the same recitations on a daily basis –
“wahi manushya hai, jo manushya ke liye mare”, which means –humanity resides
only in a being with a giving nature. But the prayers seem so mechanical, and I
wonder if anyone follows their values.

Now I cannot help but reflect on where I got the
courage to do what I did. This is my story.

Bravery was an oddity for a reserved person like me. Or so i thought.

It was the week before The Annual Sports Meet of 2014 and preparations for the
same were in full swing. Athletes were sprawled across the main ground, conversing
in a light hearted banter. The Kindergarten kids were ecstatic at having received their
colourful costumes, and people were proud of the way things were shaping up. And
in that merry atmosphere, was an annoyed me. All my friends had been placed in
another slot, and I had been left to despair in my loneliness in the Flip Card event.
And since I wasn’t particularly good, or interested in making new friends back then,
my classmates seated next to me seemed just as evening rains seemed to my
younger self, a constant annoyance that I hoped would finally pass.
nixxa – not happy with the above sentence. write another idea if possible

After an hour into rehearsals, we were led up to the stage, which was especially built
for our event. The stage- with five flights of stair-like platforms, was made of pure
teak wood; essentially built to impress. It was our first practice on the final stage, and
being one who revels in the smaller joys of life, I felt a tinge of excitement. With new
found enthusiasm, I lifted up my prop and I enacted every pose with grace and
poise, glancing up at my neighbours for keeping up the tempo. Then the unprecedented
happened.

One of the acts required half of us to be lying on our stomachs, head facing the
ground, and the other half to stay in their normal seated positions. Little could
anyone predict that the little iron nails wedged between the stage and the ground
would give way. Little did anyone realise that the basic governing laws of physics
stated that an unequal force (in this case, the weight of the children facing down),
would cause the object’s centre of mass to gravitate downward.

The stage came crumbling down upon us.

If shock feels numb, confusing and disturbingly peaceful, I experienced pure shock
that day. As a consequence of my alert reflexes, I found myself standing on both my
legs, below the stage where the debris of pure teak lay stained with cries and
screams of fleeing children. But what happened next was as though a shrouded trait in
me revealed itself. As I watched the broken twigs on stage spread out like little invites of
danger, cackling slyly, my eyes were drawn back to some large planks of wood
lying across my neighbour who was unconscious by then. My superhero self buried deep inside me, hitherto
dormant, lifted the first board off her. It took a few more tries, with my insufficient
muscle power, to displace the second. I found myself calling for help. Finally I found help in a senior, who managed to escort
both of us to the Health Room, and thankfully, she regained
consciousness soon. As for me, I had suffered deep nail pricks on my hand, which now seemed to be swelling
with an infection.

It was then, that he praised me admiringly that not everyone would have stayed back the way I had.
Through that small automatic act of standing my ground to help my friend, at my own risk and braving the poking nails, and especially when I was all alone out there amidst the debris, my true inner identity suddenly revealed itself to me – regardless of external manifestation, I was, by nature, inherently strong, selfless and courageous.

Today, you can still find me wearing different socks on each leg, henna across my palm ,
constantly tapping my feat, in the Computer Science lab, near the window, probably
learning something new from someone new, and generally enjoying my studies and life.

But then, I had already discovered myself- An eternally jolly girl with an inner streak of deep red across her solid spine !
15/11/19, 8:18 pm – Sathish: We hadn’t taken a bath for three days straight. The half eaten pizza slices co-existed in peaceful harmony with an assortment of cables, markers, and at least a dozen sheets of random stuff on what used to be my bed.

Yet, I had never felt happier with myself as that day, when the Sun sailed past the Horizon and made its way into my room despite the tinted glass.

Growing up, I had known just a single way of life – one went to a top institute and remained at the top of the class where one could also pursue hobbies of one’s choice, but your profession was pre-decided along with your first breath- you were going to be an Engineer, just like your parents! And I had always loathed that aspect of my supposedly inevitable fate- Where was the adventure? Where was the romance and the purpose of liberation of all humankind that I had been born for?

As I found myself in eighth grade, my parents were beginning to raise concerns about my indifference towards computer programming, even though we had not been introduced to it in school, yet. And I had no interest in being the topic of every family discussion over dinner.

Then one day, I stumbled upon the ‘Technovation Challenge’ by mere accident- and registered by accident as well . It wasn’t hard finding my friends in the same situation as me, and soon, I had my five membered posse.

The challenge, organised by Iridescent, required a team to submit a functional prototype of their mobile application to address an underlying issue they had observed in their community, along with a business plan, outlining their financial gains and long term investments. In short, my eighth-grade self had a lot to comprehend, but no overt interest in doing so.

That was, until we started coding.

MIT App Inventor, which was the compiler we had to use, resembled virtual Lego, if such a thing ever existed. And like any mature adult who has been coerced into giving up Lego, I couldn’t wait to start building. I started spending most of my waking hours joining small code lines into marvellous blocks of functions. As I watched my preconceived notions fade away, I began to feel powerful at having built a dynasty of blocks which engineered exactly as I willed them to.

I then spent the next two months transforming my YouTube recommendations from DIY videos and Animal Rescue channels into a mad scientist’s laboratory- unbelievably, I was learning about Databases and FOR-NEXT statements and Boolean algebra just as a dog with two tails. And this entire learning experience for that year was mind-blowing.

We applied for the program during the following year as well, as I had already found solace in programming while two of my other teammates had found theirs, in finance.

This time, our app revolved around reducing the carbon footprint globally by reducing our dependency on cars, by incentivising our customers to walk or cycle short distances instead. In our efficient code, we went as far as incorporating Google Maps and social media sites- and I could not have been prouder!.

As they say, the best experiences always come from hard work, and my team and I gave it our all during the last 3 days prior to the deadline. During the last few minutes of the application deadline, with my friends in a tense meditation behind me and my palms growing even sweatier (which seemed impossible, considering the fact that I hadn’t taken a bath in 3 days), I hit the Submit button.

The icing on the cake was – We were later invited to pitch our idea to a panel of founders, entrepreneurs and engineers at Qualcomm, India.

And as for me, I had finally found the adventure and romance I was looking for, in computer programming. Now, I cannot wait to liberate all of humankind, with what I am going to build, as i go along. With formal and relevant degree in a great institution !

What is tibia/fibula fracture open reduction and internal fixation? Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a type of surgery used to stabilize and heal a broken bone. You might need this procedure to treat your broken shin bone (tibia) or your fibula. The tibia, or shin bone, is the larger bone in your lower leg. Beside it, more toward the outside of the leg, is the fibula. The tibia forms part of the knee joint. The ends of the tibia and the fibula both form part of the ankle joint. Different kinds of injury can damage the tibia or the fibula, causing them to break into one or more pieces. This might happen in the part of the bone near the knee, near the middle long part of the bone, or in the bone near part of the ankle. (A fracture here might be called a “broken ankle.”) Only one of these bones might break, or you might have a fracture in both bones. In certain types of fractures, your bone breaks, but its pieces still line up correctly. In other types of fractures, the injury moves the bone fragments out of alignment. If you fracture your tibia or fibula, you might need ORIF to bring your bones back into place and help them heal. During an “open reduction,” orthopedic surgeons reposition your bone pieces during surgery to put them back into their proper alignment. In a “closed reduction,” a healthcare provider physically moves the bones back into place without surgically exposing the bone. “Internal fixation” refers to the method of physically reconnecting the bones. This might involve special screws, plates, rods, wires, or nails that the surgeon places inside the bones to fix them in the correct place. This prevents the bones from healing abnormally. The entire operation usually takes place while you are asleep under general anesthesia. Why might I need a tibia/fibula fracture open reduction and internal fixation? Certain medical conditions may make tibia or fibula fractures more likely. For example, osteoporosis increases the risk of fracture. Motor vehicle or cycling accidents, contact sports, falls, and repetitive impact activities are common sources of injury that can lead to a tibia or fibula fracture. You might not need ORIF if you fracture your tibia or your fibula. Many people don’t. If possible, your healthcare provider will treat your fracture with more conservative treatments, like pain medicines, casts, or braces. You probably won’t need ORIF unless there is some reason your fracture might not heal normally with these conservative treatments. You are more likely to need ORIF if: The pieces of your leg are significantly out of alignment Your broken tibia or fibula pierced through the skin Your tibia or fibula broke into several pieces Your fracture involves the knee joint Your bones haven’t healed normally after undergoing treatments that are more conservative In these cases, ORIF can place your bones back into their proper configuration, increasing the chance that your bone will eventually heal properly. You might need ORIF for a fracture that happens anywhere along your tibia or fibula. This includes portions that form part of your knee or ankle joint. What are the risks for tibia/fibula fracture open reduction and internal fixation? Most people who have ORIF for their tibia or fibula fracture do very well. Complications, although rare, can sometimes happen. Possible complications include: Infection Bleeding Nerve damage Blood clots Fat embolism Bone misalignment Irritation of the overlying tissue from the hardware There is also the risk that the fracture won’t heal properly, and you’ll need repeat surgery. Your own risk of complications may vary according to your age, the anatomy of your fracture, and your other medical conditions. For example, people with low bone mass or diabetes may be at greater risk of some complications. Smokers may also have an increased risk. Ask your healthcare provider about the risks that most apply to you. How do I prepare for a tibia/fibula fracture open reduction and internal fixation? ORIF often takes place as an emergency or urgent procedure. Before your procedure, someone will take your medical history and perform a physical exam. You’ll need imaging of your tibia and fibula, either an X-ray or computed tomography scan (CT). Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including over-the-counter medicines like aspirin. Also, let your healthcare provider know the last time you ate. In some cases, your healthcare providers might perform your ORIF a little later. You might have your leg held immobile while you wait for your surgery. Talk to your healthcare provider about how to prepare for the surgery. Ask whether you should stop taking any medicines ahead of time, like blood thinners. You’ll need to avoid food and drink after midnight the night before your procedure. What happens during a tibia/fibula fracture open reduction and internal fixation? Your healthcare provider can help explain the details of your particular surgery. These details will depend on the location and severity of your injury. An orthopedic surgeon will do the surgery aided by a team of healthcare professionals. The whole operation may take a few hours. In general, you can expect the following: You will receive a general anesthesia. This will make you sleep through the operation so that you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the operation. (Or, you may receive local anesthesia and a medicine to help you relax.) A healthcare professional will carefully monitor your vital signs, like your heart rate and blood pressure, during the operation. After cleaning the affected area, your surgeon will make an incision through the skin and muscle of your leg. Your surgeon will bring the pieces of your tibia or fibula back into alignment (“reduction”). Next, your surgeon will secure the pieces of your tibia or fibula to each other (“fixation”). To do this, he or she will use tools like screws, metal plates, nails, wires, or pins. For a fracture in the middle part of the tibia, healthcare providers often use a specially designed long metal rod that passes through the middle of the bone. Your healthcare provider will make other repairs, if necessary. After the team has secured the bone, your surgeon will close the layers of skin and muscle around your leg. What happens after a tibia/fibula fracture open reduction and internal fixation? Talk to your healthcare provider about what you can expect after your surgery. You may have significant pain after your procedure, but pain medicines may help to relieve the pain. You should be able to resume your normal diet quickly. You will probably have some sort of imaging procedure, like an X-ray, done to verify your surgery was successful. Depending on the extent of your injury and your other medical conditions, you might be able to go home the same day. For a while after your surgery, you may need to keep your leg immobile. This usually means wearing a brace, perhaps for several weeks. You may need to protect your leg from water. You’ll receive instructions about how you can move your leg and whether you can put weight on it. Follow all your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully. You might need to take medicine to prevent blood clots (a blood thinner) for a little while after your surgery. Your healthcare provider might not want you to take certain over-the-counter medicines for pain, because some of these can interfere with bone healing. Your healthcare provider may advise you to eat a diet high in calcium and vitamin D as your bone heals. You may have some fluid draining from your incision site. This is normal. Let your healthcare provider know right away if there is an increase in redness, swelling, or draining from your incision site. You should also inform your healthcare provider right away if you have a high fever, chills, severe pain that does not improve, or any loss of feeling in your leg. Make sure to keep all of your follow-up appointments. You may need to have your stitches or staples removed a week or so after your surgery. At some point, you may need physical therapy to restore strength and flexibility to your muscles. Doing your exercises as prescribed can improve your chances of full recovery. These fractures often take several months to heal completely, but you should be able to resume many of your activities before this time.

No, Brahmins cannot consume alcohol under normal circumstances.

The twelfth Chapter of the Parashara Smriti discuses the possible expiation of the sin a Brahmana accumulates after consuming alcohol:

A Brahman who has drunk wine must go to a river that falls into the sea; he must perform a Chandrayana, which being finished, he is to give a feast to the Brahmans, and by way of a fee, he is to give a cow and a bull to the Brahmans. (75) If a Brahman has drunk wine only once, he must drink flaming hot spirituous liquor; thereby he will purify himself, both as regards this world, and as regards the other world. (76)

According to the Smritis, not only Brahmins, none of the twice-borns are allowed to drink spirituous liquors.

Manu Smriti 9.235. The slayer of a Brahmana, (A twice-born man) who drinks (the spirituous liquor called) Sura, he who steals (the gold of a Brahmana), and he who violates a Guru’s bed, must each and all be considered as men who committed mortal sins (mahapataka)

Drinking liquor, in fact, is considered as one of the five great sins (mahapataka).

Usana Smriti says:

THE destroyer of a Brahmanas, one who drinks spirituous liquors, a thief, and the violator of the preceptor’s bed, and the one who associates with them, are the great sinners.

Chapter 8, Verse 1

Same thing is repeated in Chandogya Upanishad 5.10.9:

Steno hiranyasya surAm pivamshacha gurostalpamAvasan brahmahA |
Chaite patanti chatvArah panchamashchAcharamstaih ||

One who steals gold, who drinks Sura, who cohabits with the Guru’s wife and one who slays a Brahmin – these four and the the fifth, who associates with these four – all of these five become fallen.

 [9:40 pm, 11/6/2025] Sathish: the 5 sins – i love the 3rd one – one who cahabits with the guru’s wife !!!
[10:01 pm, 11/6/2025] Sathish: and coopra – pl be v careful when u write about someone’s mom, someone’s wife etc. it is quite dangerous since it can easily provoke revenge milkisms ( since each of us is intelligent enof to structure it impersonally). so pl guys, lets not do more damage than what has already been done

Book Summary The Alchemy of Finance Author: George Soros 01 In “The Alchemy of Finance”, the billionaire investor George Soros, expounds a new way of thinking about economic behaviour, demonstrang how financial players affect the movement of markets. He shares details of his innovave investment pracces, including his “theory of reflexivity” which underlies his unique investment strategies, along with his views of the world and world order. While the book is a brilliant guide on how financial markets work, it can be a bit complicated and challenging to understand. Key Takeaways Ÿ Billionaire George Soros says markets do not tend towards equilibrium and certainty. Ÿ The “theory of reflexivity” states that what parcipants think of a situaon will change that situaon. Ÿ The expectaons of market parcipants shape market facts, which, in turn, shape parcipants’ expectaons. Ÿ This constant cycle makes market equilibrium impossible. Ÿ Because humans are uncertain, imperfect and self-reinforcing, so are the markets. Ÿ The theory of efficient markets and raonal expectaons imply that markets will opmally allocate resources. However, markets are, in fact, inefficient and humans are irraonal and biased. Ÿ Fundamentalists say markets are a force for moral good, but they are not. Ÿ Regulaon may have been excessive in the second half of the 20th century, but deregulaon seems excessive now. Ÿ The internaonal financial system keeps central wealthy countries rich and in power. Ÿ History does not move from outcome to outcome, but from expectaon to outcome to expectaon. Economics and Reflexivity The concept of reflexivity is a complex one. It has two integral parts. One part is the observaon of how a person’s thought process about a parcular situaon influences the situaon, while the other part is how the situaon influences the way a person thinks about the situaon. An individual’s understanding of a situaon will always be flawed because in reality what he/she is trying to understand is infact not constant. This means that people really can’t know their situaons, because those situaons are conngent on what people know about them. It is like the classic chicken and egg story. As a stock market parcipant you will observe several fluctuaons in the market. However, since the underlying condions are also changing constantly, especially when it’s supposed to be reflecng the changes in the market, it’s a lile difficult to show a firm relaonship between the market and your expectaons. Most market theories can be divided into technical and fundamental theory. While the technical theory is limited, if any, use to the market praconer, the fundamental theory is quite interesng since it’s nothing but an extension of the equilibrium theory. It focuses on the relaonship between the companies and their stock prices. While it is commonly accepted that the fundamentals of a company have a strong influence on its stock price, not many consider that the stock prices can also affect the fate of the companies. Any discrepancies between fundamental values and stock prices are quickly ignored and are blamed on the company’s future developments. One must also think in the opposite manner and consider the possibility that stock prices do not necessarily reflect the underlying values. In fact, the market has too many distorng valuaons and these distorons also have the ability to affect underlying values. Of course, this is not to say that the events that take place don’t correspond with the expectaons of the parcipants. However, markets tend to be biased at all mes in at least one direcon. In addion, the markets also possess the power to affect the events they can ancipate. “Markets cannot and will not arrive at a stable equilibrium precisely because the thoughts and therefore the acons of market parcipants will affect market behaviour: The market will in turn influence the ‘fundamentals’ and shape new expectaons in the connuing reflexive process.” [ – Paul A. Volcker, foreword] One of the mainstays of contemporary finance is the theory of raonal expectaons. It proposes that investors are raonal and thus their current expectaons provide a full picture of future events. It assumes that market prices are efficient, which means Book Summary 02 that they incorporate and express the aggregate effect of all available informaon. This theory suggests that financial markets will move toward equilibrium based on parcipants’ expectaons unless some external shock introduces new informaon. Taken together, efficient markets and raonal expectaons imply that markets will opmally allocate resources. However, considerable evidence indicates that this is false. “The concept of reflexivity is very simple. In situaons that have thinking parcipants, there is a two-way interacon between the parcipants’ thinking and the situaon in which they parcipate.” To assume that all market parcipants are raonal and always act in their own best interest is irraonal. To be fair, parcipants do make investment decisions that they assume to be in their best interest. However, market parcipants have an imperfect understanding of the market and are strongly influenced by behavioural biases. This means that what they consider to be in their best interest might infact be just the opposite. Therefore, they oen make decisions that turn out not to be in their best interests, even though they thought they would be. “Bias prevailing in the financial markets can affect the so-called fundamentals that markets are supposed to reflect.” Speculators expect prices to rise, so they try to buy low now to make a profit later. Their buying pushes prices up, so it appears as if their expectaon of rising prices was correct. This self-reinforcing process connues unl the market can no longer sustain it. Markets are usually wrong, but they look right because of self-reinforcement. The incorrectness of this bias is exposed at inflecon points, where expectaons change – but only at inflecon points. Bubbles are only one example of reflexivity in acon. The “Human Uncertainty Principle” The human uncertainty principle is something like the “Heisenberg uncertainty principle” in physics. However, humans tend to be more uncertain than physical parcles. This is because immutable laws of science do not change because of what people think of them. However, the reality is different for humans. Human beings are capable of creang social reality based on their own percepons and understanding of their environment. Consequently, they make decisions based on what they believe and expect, not on what they know with certainty, because there can be no certainty. Since their decisions are not necessarily based on knowledge, the results of their acons are likely to be something other than what they expect. This can be detrimental to making opmal investment choices. One must always stay alert to the possibility that any investor can make mistakes. You must always be tuned into the reality that decisions usually have unexpected, unintended results. Financial markets oen support delusions and decepons, as in booms and busts, and even successful outcomes do not prove any given hypothesis. “The ‘human uncertainty principle’…holds that people’s understanding of the world in which they live cannot correspond to the facts and be complete and coherent at the same me.” Power Relaonships Power relaonships and polical events can seriously impact the ability of market parcipants to make free exchanges. The world financial system has two types of countries: those in the center and those on the periphery. Internaonal debts are denominated in the currencies of the center countries. Therefore, these naons have a sharp advantage over the peripheral countries. They can borrow in their own currencies, but peripheral countries cannot. This gives the center countries the liberty to use countercyclical fiscal and monetary policies that are designed to keep their economies strong, for example, applying financial smulus rulings when recessions loom. “Only when the fundamentals are affected does reflexivity become significant enough to influence the course of events.” Countries at the periphery do not have this power, because they have borrowed in foreign currencies. Thus, they must subject themselves to the discipline of internaonal lenders, such as the Internaonal Monetary Fund, which defends this system and The Alchemy of Finance Author: George Soros Book Summary 03 the interests of the center countries. If the price of protecng internaonal lenders is a recession in peripheral countries, the lenders are willing to pay it. Of course, they aren’t really the ones who pay. It is the peripheral country that pays it. Financial globalisaon is one of the main items on the agenda of market fundamentalists. Governments no longer have the power to control the movement of capital across the globe, which flows easily and efficiently to whatever venues that offer the best-expected returns. Market fundamentalists have been remarkably successful in reducing taxes, deregulang and spurring one of history’s longest bull markets. The United States and the United Kingdom profited immensely by acng as bankers to the world and as investment desnaons for global savings. The heavily indebted countries of the periphery paid a steep, painful price. “Parcipants are not in a posion to prevent a boom…even if they recognize that it is bound to lead to a bust. That is true of all boom/bust sequences. Abstaining altogether is neither possible nor advisable.” Back in the 1970s, banks were considered to be boring and dull. Managements found it tough to forget the failures experienced in the 1930s and safety seemed like the best opon. However, there were changes occurring underneath. There slowly emerged a new breed of managers and other people who conducted business aggressively. With a different school of thought, these bankers believed in pushing the envelope and certainly went far ahead than what was acceptable at that me. They understood that they had to increase the equity capital in order to connue their growth. During this me, there was a tremendous demand for oil and the money just piled up in the countries that had a huge stock. Petrodollars became the new buzzword and those who had it yielded much power. The banks were more than happy to lend and also found many takers. This sort of internaonal lending aracted many other bankers who didn’t even have any experience in their field. It went on to such an extent that the banks could no longer keep up with the fast pace and were stretched to the maximum. As the posion of the debtor countries worsened, the banks found it almost impossible to disengage themselves from the chaos. Therefore, it is extremely crucial to supervise financial instuons. In addion, it is also important to have some kind of an intervenon to prevent the situaon from going completely out of control. Market Fundamentalists The theory of market equilibrium is built on the assumpon that investors are raonal and that markets will allocate resources in an opmum way. However, if the markets do not seek equilibrium then there is no reason for them to be opmal. In fact, markets do not move toward equilibrium – reflexivity and human uncertainty ensure that equilibrium is unachievable. “Financial success depends on the ability to ancipate prevailing expectaons and not real-world developments.” The ideas of market fundamentalism have swayed many people in the financial world. It is important to understand that even though market results are objecve, measurable facts, they are not “true”. This stems from the fact that markets lack equilibrium and are hence, never stable. Every acvity we take up is quickly measured by the amount of profit it can deliver. The fact that people now measure the quality of an arst based on the price paid for the arst’s work, not on its arstry or merit, indicates how far market fundamentalism has gone. We are all driven with the urge to think about profit even while doing something that is supposed to be movang and inspiring. The move to make a profit is so deep-rooted that it’s almost impossible to consider anything else other than making money. Moreover, any values that the market cannot measure seem incomprehensible to the fundamentalists. Markets tend to instability – not equilibrium – because of reflexivity and uncertainty, the boom-and-bust process, and other elements. Markets are unstable and are increasingly growing more unstable. While regulaon in the 20th century may definitely have been considered excessive, deregulaon seems excessive now. The world may need an internaonal central bank and an internaonal currency linked to oil. Markets are not a force for moral good – they are amoral. To the extent that society values stability and moral good, it must bring these values back to the market process with appropriate instuons and regulaons. The Alchemy of Finance Author: George Soros

We are happy to enclose a programme brochure on “Organizational Leadership for the Twenty-First Century” to be held at IIMA during January 6 – 9, 2020. We believe leadership will be the most critical resource and developing leaders the most critical activity in the next century. We have developed a unique programme addressed to this need. We can assure you that your managers will find this programme an unforgettable experience. We are saying this from the experience of having taught “Leadership: Vision, Meaning and Reality” (LVMR) in PGP and having coordinated this Programme for the last 18 years. My name is Anirud (from Bangalore, India) , and I am 15 years old. I am at school, preparing for upcoming college entrance exams. I purchased Bandicam a few months back with my father’s email id “s@es22.com” and my licence code is given below.

Since my parents are divorced, i live in 2 different houses during the week and use 2 different PCs.

As a student, I am finding it very difficult to fund (ie pay money) for one more licence for my 2nd PC. Since i am the only user, and as a student, can you consider providing access to my 2nd PC without any extra charges ?

From my side, i promise to popularise bandicam among my friends and in my school.

Your company policy may be strict, but i still thought I could try sincerely, and hence this mail.

Thanks for everything – and believe me – you have a great software (bandicam)

However, since i am scheduled to visit only next month, and the matter is important, i am writing in now. 2. Many Devin members have complained to Mr Rajiv about the use of our terrace for purposes of “public nuisance”. You may say that the other residents of Devin are wrong, and we in MGA are SAINTS, but at the end of the day, I have to bow down to the association. Rajiv Sir’s words – “Many other residents have complained to the Management commitee that our building is used as a LOUD get-together of youngsters, making the layout families feel uncomfortable and not safe” 3. Hence I clearly mandate that the terrace and our building be used by the tenants only for personal purposes, and not as a “meeting point” for youngsters. While the rental agreement clearly states that the right to terrace and the ground is for both the units, I am sure that we need to abide by the rules/regulations of the society/association that we live in. Am I am bringing this up ONLY BECAUSE my association president called me up and has personally WARNED me. 4. I also DO NOT want to be drawn into a judge-like role between two units. I am sure that neither of us has the time for this, since most rules of co-living (between unit G and F) has been CLEARLY spelt out in the rental agreements 5. So, if you are able to sort it out amicably between the units, GREAT. Alternately, you could always approach Mr Rajiv for any doubts about the rules of the layout. I have given both his nos, as u can see. 6. The last alternative ( and the only one finally available to me) is to request my tenants to vacate, because all these issues make the whole concept of tenanting of MGA unviable for me. 7. I do hope you understand, and as mature individuals, would request Sashi Mm/Rupam Mm to sit and close out. Since I have put my points very clearly, pl dont involve me with operational aspects, unless we want to look at option no 6. Thanks, and good day to all at MGA.

1-spoke to hussain today reg the water controller. he has asked cauvery hardware for some materials (which were not available apparently that day), so he will fix ur issue after cauvery receives the stuff by tomorrow or day after. He also mentioned abt him returning some Rs 500 back to MGA-F(no idea abt this, so am not getting involved will come with carpenter on monday, 13 nov, 2017 – works to be done – mga-f – full wood cabinet and wood keyholder, nilkamal cabinet, fix the mosq mesh issue, anything else ? mga-g : fix nilkamal, make a wood frame with mosq mesh for the front door, fix the two chrome aluminium clothes stand, anything else ?

I personally feel that the physical water meter also not required if the cost involved is that high. We are sharing equally the water consumption cost and the same can be continued if rupam also is ok with this suggestion.

I spoke to the wateron people today morning. For independent houses with only 2 units, the only product they have is called warm-E, where the basic model is Rs 10499 for smallest size. They recommend Rs 12-13K meter for a normal 2BHK unit. So 2 meters = about 25K. Above this, cost of installation is Rs 800 per meter. And if existing meter piping is not compatible, then they have to change the full piping system. So I estimate that capital cost here will be in range of Rs 30-32K approx. Over and beyond this, there is recurring cost of Rs 60/ month (GSM SIM Card fixed to the water meter which transmits the data to your mobile reg water consumption). As i mentioned earlier, would request the units to also speak to them directly ( I spoke to their Sales Head, Mr Jitender, 99180-07770) and get a demo if possible. The maths does not look favourable – ie for saving Rs 100-300 every month, till the time Cauvery water comes. Pl note – it is not actual saving but “notional” saving -there is no “REAL” saving of water here – only a part of the BILL is shifted from one column to another (Sandy as a Commerce grad will understand this !).

Will be very happy if Swati/Sandy or anyone else could do a small study on wateron and look at feasibility. My estimates are these (since we have only 2 flats) Wateron capital cost is Rs 95002 ( or 75002). Their one-time installation cost is Rs 5000 per unit(not sure of this no since i picked it from some site). Added cost of extra piping => So estimated cost = Rs 25-30K Currently, the 2 units consume water for Rs 1500 per month (?), so now they are dividing 750 between themselves. So, the best possible scenario is : one unit consumes for only 300 and the other unit for 1200. So, the best savings (if water meter is installed) => is Rs 300-400 per month (for one of the units). So, installing wateron amortises this savings in a period of (30,000/300) = 100 months, or 9 years approx. And we are not even talking about maintenance costs. And once again note – we are ASSUMING that one apt gets a benefit of 300. If in case both apts consume more or less equal water ( ie if we assume only Rs 100 savings for one unit), then it becomes 30K/100 = 300 months payback, or 27 years (i am dead by then !). —————– Would request mgag/mgaf to call wateron and ask them to visit MGA, get their demo and convince urselves that it is feasible/viable. If the maths looks good, let me assure that i shall pay up and get it installed immediately. But i need to be convinced of the maths (since physical water meters, which i am going to replace for you on 13th, cost Rs 6000 with maybe 1-2K extra for installation). Since wateron provides lot of comfort for the tenants personally (ie u can see online etc) – would really request you folks to take the lead and close the loop. Thanks ! As regards water softening, I assume that the RO machines take care of the same, so I have done the bare minimum as a landlord. But in case the tenants decide to spend extra on any device and instal in their homes, pl feel free ! Thanks again, and good night 04/09/18, 22:10 – customerelakshya: one more point : if and when cauvery water comes to Devin, concept of water meter might become redundant. Am hoping this happens in under 2 years from now due to metro/bhartiya city and also bcos devin is a BDA layout

Happy to note that Shashi mam tried to call with her list. However, i did not see any missed call (maybe some problem with my phone). Pl do go thru my previous message and also pl go thru my “detailed” rental document (in 2-3 days time)

At the time of tenant vacating(in future), i usually involve tenant very thoroughly for every single item / rupee of deduction. With respect to MGA/F, when the time for vacating arrives, I will only be doing a “perfunctory heads-up information call” (eg – during Sandy’s college time) and proceed with all expenses, purchases, deductions myself. Trust this is ok.

The other big problem is huge inflation/cheating of amount by the shopkeeper due to inexperience of the buyer. For example, Sandy Sir bought a tap for Rs 1300 (the same one which is available in City-Market for just Rs 300 !). And since this has been billed fully to me, the person who suffers as a result of this inexperience is MYSELF

During my previous visit ( to sort the solar problem and to remove the fallen tree), i met up with sandy sir and rupam ma’m and had detailed discussions with both. 1. i was VERY CONCERNED that it is proposed to penalise me (ie deductions from rent payable) for “running expenses” ( as per our rental agreement). 2. i told this to sandy clearly – “If items like tap etc (after a year of occupation) are being imposed on landlord, pl show me one rental agreement from any of his friends, or any apartment where this happens. wud request sandy sir to work on this and give me a sample document of such an apartment ! ( or let us visit one such apartment together and talk to the owner). 3. however, in view of rupam ma’ms request, i promised to do this : for once and for all, i will bring plumber + electrician + carpenter to MGA. They will take 2-3 days minimum and sort out all the existing problems (if any). All this will be under my expense. But after this, we will go strictly by the rental agreement. 4. To avoid the smallest possible confusion, i added full description of almost all possible future repair issues, and clearly divided the items into responsibility of LL/TT (landlord/tenant). This (in my knowledge) is the standard procedure followed everywhere. However, since Sandy Sir still seemed to have questions, i have asked him to do his homework ( ie point no 2) and revert. This new draft has been discussed with sandy/rupam – and i will also circulate it in 2-3 days by whatsapp. when i visit mga, would need your help in jointly signing this, please. 5. To avoid further dialog etc, i have also agreed to take the entire burden of the Rs 4700 charge imposed by sandy sir. My huge concern here was that this was an UNAPPROVED expense ( irrespective of my phone availability, i would have wanted some communication of such an impending expense, but instead, received only a POST-FACTO DEDUCTION NOTIFICATION, which is unfair. All of you work in a corporate environment, and irrespective of the approving authority’s phone availability, you are expected to document any sudden expense/contingency before proceeding, right ? But as i said, i agreed to absorb this full expense. On the same day, i also called sashi ma’m and asked her to communicate her separate figure of deduction. Since nothing has come from her side so far, i assume it is NIL. ——————————— A. Pl give me a block of 2 continous days (12th/13th or 13th/14th or 14th/15th or 15th/16th or 16th/17th) where i will be stationed at mga with all the vendors and SORT ALL REPAIR ISSUES at MGA. S request mgaf/mgaf to discuss quickly among themselves and confirm the dates to me. B. I will also collect my 2 months rent from both units on one of those days (net of deductions as committed by me).

after my discussions yesterday with rupam sir (where it was prefered that i visit today morning with my plumber/carpenter/electrician (PCE), i had got a call from sashi mam about her unavailability due to swati’s illness. so i canceled PCE schedules accordingly. 2. Sandy then called and i have asked him to coordinate with date/time for picking up 2 months rent from both units. This is urgent, so pl respond asap. I assume that i have to pay Rs 4700 to MGAG and Rs 5900 to MGAF. I also assume that you have separate bills for these amounts (except perhaps labour). 3. Rupam mam had wanted this about a month back ( ie PCE done from my side, ie all expenses from my side, and one-time activity). We have still not able to get a common date/time for this. Pl inform me the same after discussions, and pl suggest 2 alternative dates (except sundays). Rupam mam/Sandy sir – MGAG’s lease has ended on Sept 30, so we need to get it renewed. Pl look at ur lease deed and the 7% escalation clause, applicable from Oct 1 2018 onwards.

If in case u are not able to coord with babu, i am ok eith ur own plumber also(anyone). The step to be followed here is- let the person visit and see the issue, u can discuss with him abt total cost, pl then send his ph no and details of the work, 12 hours after sending me this info u can start the work regardless of whether i call back or not. U can then pay the plumber and deduct from me in FULL Thanks. We will connect with Babu in the evening Tauseef confirmed to me that door has been put witwh mesh. Pl confirm if this is ok and works properly Trust the plumber came in evening. Pl update on position Shall update tomorrow morning after checking. Reached home late Neethi told that Yesterday plumber babu came but she misplaced the terrace door key somewhere and he did not wait untill she searched and got it. I called him this morning he said that he will try today otherwise will come tomorrow ok – pl close this issue quickly – thanks – i am due for some travel to chennai but keeping it on hold due to this issue (bcos i may need to travel to mga at short notice) – thanks for understanding We r doing separate connection for four bathroom also 1-sandy – i called plumber and he said he has already started the work 2- u can do the work for as many bathrooms as u want, but i hope the price / cost does not increase 3-i hope at mga u will be organising the 5.5K and paying him – i hope i am not needed to come there to give the money (or) go to any ATM and deposit the money (or) transfer the money to anyone’s account If that is the case, pl stop work immediately – and i will personally come and do the work on saturday Actually my aunt’s salary has not come So we will not be able to pay him PL STOP THE WORK IMM – I WILL COME AND DO THE WORK MYSELF ON SATURDAY OR U CAN REQUEST HIM TO WAIT TILL SAT TO PICK UP THE FUNDS TRIED TO CALL BOTH SASHI AND SANDY – SINCE PHONE NOT PICKED UP – I CALLED PLUMBER ALSO 1- either arrange money for plumber and give him 5.5K 2 – or postpone work to saturday when i will come personally 3- or convince plumber to come to jp nagar to pick up funds 4 – or have plumber wait till sat to pick up funds once salaries come in U can transfer to account rit no sandy – i will NOT BE ABLE TO DO IT MY BANK ACCOUNTS ARE BLOCKED And wt about all bathroom connection what about them ? pl call me asap on 080-41697474 as per latest position at 1020 am – i am leaving for MGA now and carrying all the cash (also full extra cash for the other 2 bathrooms) – i will pay the plumber directly in FULL – thanks to both the units for their help and coordination i shud reach on 3 hours – ie by 130 or so I hv purchase rs 2000 extra material for the extra 2 bathrooms and given to sandy. I have also given rs 4000 cash to sandy in cash ( 1.5k after my lunch). So 5.5k as asked by plumber. Sandy to hand over and close account with plumber directly only after confirming himself and wutg his own eyes that all 4 bathrooms solar, geysers are working to his satisfaction. I will NOT be attending any plumbing work henceforth Everything is clear Every work is finished I gave the money to plumber And he has gone Did u also give him the extra 500? So u gave 6k to plumber, rite? I had clearly mentioned in my msg of Wednesday (230 pm) that ” I will NOT be attending any plumbing work henceforth” (pl scroll up). I also got full confirmation from Sandy from his own message : “Everything is clear. Every work is finished I gave the money to plumber And he has gone” So, i am quite concerned that i am repeatedly getting phone calls and getting penalised, both monetarily and work-wise, towards running expense matters of MGA, so kindly read below – —————————————— Dear MGAG / MGAF, 1. Division of responsibility of tenant vs landlord was clearly explained during personal meeting with Rupam Mam/Sandy about 1 month back and with Sashi Mam/Swati on Sunday when i had met in person. 2. Structural – full responsibility of landlord Any cracks in wall, any building construction defect, plaster peels, broken tiles or bricks, broken staircase, ceiling seepage due to rain, earthquake damage, tree fall damage etc : Full resposnbility of landlord Only exception is : If any wall or tile or brick is damaged during the movement of bureau or other items in or out of the house 3. Plumbing : a. Running Expense – responsibility of tenant (s) This includes things like flushtank, leakage, tap replacements, geyser water not coming, washbasin leakage, kitchen sink, health faucet, shower, connection from tank to units, L-joints, Geyser coil burn, AMC maintenance of water meter etc b. Capital Expense – responsibility of landlord Solar machine and ball replacements, Motor replacement, Geyser Structural or machine problem, Concealed piping in building issue 4. Electricity : The KEB pipe comes into the building to then further split between the 2 units and the various light and plug points. Landlord’s responsibility is ONLY till the current comes inside building. After that it is tenant responsibility – ie plug point burns, fan repair and replacements, lights etc. The KEB switchboards and meter ( purchased – June 2015) have a life of 5 years minimum, so in case of any repair of this item, your own electrician can give verdict whether it is a structural fault or a wrong-usage related issue, based on which landlord/tenant take the responsibility accordingly. 5. Carpentry : Every carpentry item, lock not working, hinges not functioning, plywood peeling, door not closing, windows repair, stopcock come off – all these are clearly running expenses. So, except for the paint/enamel itself (which is capital item), the full maintenance of the brown goods/furniture is responsibility of tenant(s) 6. Capital goods with month and year of purchase AC : june 2018 Livpure purifiers : Oct 2017 and March 2018 (MGAG / MAGF) Geyser : April 2016 ( main geysers) and during 2017 (instant geysers) UPS/Battery : July 2016 (MGAF) and Nov 2017 (MGAG) Chimneys : April 2016 (both MGAF and MGAG) Just like the KEB meter, each of these capital goods have minimum life of 5 years. In case of breakdown during these 5 years, your own electrician can give verdict whether it is a structural company fault or wrong-usage related issue, based on which landlord/tenant take the responsibility accordingly. Beyond 5 years, responsibility for their damage and repair is that of the landlord. 7. AC coolant replenish, AC servicing etc, Purifier filter replacement etc are full responsibility of tenant. In case of the BATTERY of the UPS, it is a CONSUMABLE which gets depleted based on usage and bad maintenance, as u all know. So any replacement is full responsibililty of the tenant. 8. A – If case of any running expense matter, landlord need not be informed at all – pl get it rectified at ur ends and get on with life – there is no reason to involve landlord !! B – In case of any capital expense matter, I will visit within 24 hours of being informed and solve the issue. If it is even more urgent than that ( or if i am not available in town), then i will have a telecall where i will take responsibilty for the expense as estimated during the telecon. In case i am not reachable on telephone as well, pl message me with full details and give 6 hours time before u start the work at your end 9. Sandy Sir informed me that he did lot of work during the sump matter where he worked inside the sump etc etc. Sashi Mam informed me that she does coordination work on regular basis for MGA in general on a few tasks. I have clearly communicated to both that I can be suitably billed for this service, and i asked for Sashi mam’s proforma invoice/proposal also. I will close the matter in a few days in case this does not come in 10. I am absolutely clear on the responsbility that any landlord in general takes, and pl refer to the rental agreement as well. I will NOT run away from any task/expense from my end (which is MY responsibility), to make life comfortable for your stay. Even as of last week, I had done the various works as given here : (RE means “running expense”) Steel tap in garden : RE, but paid by landlord Low Washbasin water in both MGAG and MGAF : RE, but paid by landlord Exhaust fan replacement : RE, but paid by landlord Flushtanks leakage both units : RE, but paid by landlord Tubelight replace in MGAF : RE, but paid by landlord I also did all the capital expense work asked by my tenants – ie 4 bathroom connections to solar, all window replace with new mosquito mats, steel door with mesh for MGAG etc. I also absorbed the full 11K billed to me by both the units. When neither of my tenant was able to arrange 6K towards plumbing advance, I came all the way to finish the work. So, I believe that i have gone out of the way to accomodate the demands at MGA from time to time, and henceforth, will have to follow the rule-book strictly. 11. I do hope that both units read this above note very clearly, since every single aspect will be examined for proper working and suitable deductions (if any), as and when you are vacating the premises (in the future), so we do not want unneccesary arguments at that point of time. A. In case the tenant feels that the rulebook itself is wrong and the landlord is putting unnecessary clauses. Or if you feel that the product itself is bad (MGAG/MGAF building) – ie poor construction standard, poor plumbing and electrical fittings etc. option 1 : pl feel free to refer to any other agremeement between any landlord/tenant and point out to me with proof that “as landlord i need to take up more responsibility”, and i shall gladly comply and change the conditions as a result ( I asked Sandy for some homework in this matter, but did not get response) (OR) option 2 : Pl feel free to vacate, since it is my fault that i am suddenly putting up such conditions. It is my fault that the product is bad. In that case, you are free to vacate the premises and I shall be happy to oblige. Since it is my fault that the product is bad, i shall gladly waive the notice-period requirement and not insist on the same. Thanks again, have a great weekend. My next date of visit to MGA in Jan 13, 2019 for collection of 2 months rent from each unit After repairing the plumbing work solar everything was working properly On that day So the plumber told that if something is wrong thn u can call me next day So next day gyser was not working so we called to plumber and he drank and came and with in 5 min he went off he didn’t check Since that day gyser is not working So we r facing problem We r not able to get hot water through gyser So today we called other plumber And he is telling that walb is missing in both the bathroom which the other plumber has not fixed So we r not going to bare the cost Bcz after any work is done at the time we cannot get clarified that everything is properly working or not After proper use only we can come to know that it is working or not So after knowing that gyser is not working we called the plumber who has worked already but there was no response from him And he had drank and come We have called plumber today and he have clearly told that in both the bathroom walb is missing So we have to fix that And that cost around 450 each and the plumber service charge is separate We will provide u with the bill and the plumber no u can spk to him So we will not be able to bare the cost Hi sandy- I might be completely wrong in my views, but I certainly feel that over the last 2 years, I have borne a lot of running expenses at mga. As I mentioned in my earlier message v clearly, the tenant can always terminate the agreement if he thinks that I am unfair, or if the product(ie the house and its fittings) is bad, and I am happy to waive the notice periods. Do hope u guys understand my stance, and the decisions is yours. So, I will not bear these expenses please I had also mentioned one more, less aggressive alternative to u earlier-if u feel that my rules are unfair, u could always produce a sample rental agreement from any other apt ( normal, standard agreement) where the owner on a continuous basis bears all these expenses! So my dear friend, prove that to me and I shall give u a special gift of RS 5000 ! Infact, I had spoken to Ranjit, ur real-estate friend about 3 months back. He said that in rr signature, we get good 3bhks for just 10k pm! And the landlord bears every possible expense- shifting in, shifting out, broken flushtank, broken faucets, broken taps, washbasin getting thin water, lights getting fused, leakage etc etc. I can always go in his Enfield, visit a few places, and do the needful. But pl note that my offer of waiver of notice period is only valid for this month. U cannot suddenly wake up after 6 months and say that u want to vacate without giving any notice. So take care, and have a great weekend! Typo-u can go in his enfield My original schedule is to visit mga on Jan 13 for 2 month collection. But incase u are not agreeing with my clauses and hence want to vacate, pl communicate to me before 16 Dec itself. I am traveling to Hong Kong from 18 Dec to 6 Jan, so will not be accessible please Sandy- I was once again going thru it message and ur problem with the plumber? If u remember, on that Wednesday, I came in 3 hours time, I purchased all items costing 5k, and I handed over 6k to ur hand, asking u to pay only after full satisfaction? U are a very wise person who claims every single rupee from me- why did u not hold some of his payment? His family must also be v angry with u bcos u gave him all the cash so easily and that helped him to go to bar and get drunk! Hi sandy- I don’t want to continue the discussion/argument- we don’t have entire Sunday evening to waste on each other. I have stated my position v clearly. If in case u are not in a position to pay my full rent on Jan 13, I shall give u notice period and wud request tenant to vacate as per normal clause-ie 1 month(pl look at it rental agreement which u signed in Nov 2017). Hv a great evening, my friend. I am signing off! Dear Sandy/Rupam Mam/Sashi Mam, I am sure that u have been seeing my chat conversations with Sandy. I have made my stance very clear, and i sincerely request that i not be penalised anymore for “running” expenses ( i am always ready to bear any capital expense at any time now and in future) . As per your feedback, the product is very substandard (ie the house, its plumbing, its electricity connections etc etc) and i offer my sincerest apologies for the extremely poor quality. And so, since i am the shopkeeper who has given a very bad product to you, you always has an option as a buyer, to return the product. What u cannot do is to retain the product (ie the house) and still keep penalising me continuously on some aspect or the other. To be fair to me, pl remember that i have given many other options as well. I had done all the expenses in the past. I even offered a cash reward of Rs 5000 to Sandy to show me a sample rental agreement where the landlord bears such expenses continuously. So – Option 1 I do hope that we do not re-visit this matter when i visit on Jan 13 for the collections. Neither of us has the energy/bandwidth for arguments. Option 2 But on the other hand, if you still intend to levy penalty towards these new plumbing expenses (in Sandy’s messages of today), please treat my mail as my formal communication of termination of rental agreement. To help further,I am absolutely ok for the following – 1-I am willing to compensate you for the hardship in shifting – eg – i am ready to bear truck-shifting chargesIetc. 2- Instead of the 1-month clause, i am ok to extend the vacation clause to 3 months, to help you even further (ie till Feb-end 2019). 3-i shall add these new plumbing expenses of yours when we are doing final settlement Again repeating – What u cannot do is to keep on retaining and holding on to the product (ie the house) and still levy the penalty, which then, becomes plain and unlawful coercion Thanks once again, and have a great evening. Unless you prefer to go with Option 2, I do not wish to engage in discussions on this any further, please Sandy – If there is any confusion at ur end still as to what constitutes running and capital – pl refer to my older message and also my discussions with both the tenants in person. I REPEAT THAT I AM ALWAYS READY TO BEAR ANY CAPITAL EXPENSES, AS PER OUR CLEAR CLAUSES The problem with solar and gyser to separate connection is capital expenses The old plumber will only come the capital expenses has already been done by me, and okayed by u and u sent away the plumber. So any problem therein is not my concern. I am not getting involved. Thanks, gud nite I just informed u that this is the problem And tomorrow that old plumber will only come I just said as per that day work is done Any further issue I will contact plumber And next day only we informed u that gyser is not working

u can find out from him please pl tell ur management that it is really very funny that they object to the term “cash deposit” but they are ok with the term “NEFT cash deposit !!!” 17/11/19, 8:20 pm – Sathish: I am NOT happy with your response. 1. The forex rate which i am about to get from you now, is today’s rate and not yesterday’s rate. Hence i am losing a further Rs 100 in the process 2. I was not pre-informed about the 150 charge. The bank has not taken that money from you, so why are YOU charging it to me 3. It has taken so many calls/emails from my side, for u to resolve this. And this inspite of my informing doorstepforex every step of the way of my intention to do a cash deposit. So let this txn go thru. But i hope it is ok to pursue this matter and ur processes wrt the senior management – isha kedia and others. Pl confirm if you are ok with the use of your name towards the same purpose. Txs.  Dear Sir, We’re sorry to hear of your less than satisfactory experience with us and hope you will accept our sincerest apologies. As per the discussion, here is the short summary of the order. We had received your order for reloading the forex card on the 29th of January and it was processed on 29th January as we have received the payment in our account on 30th January which was a cash deposit of rs 48500/-. There was a penalty charge of Rs 150/-which was charged by us and not your bank. Also, Due to a technical error on our dashboard, the delivery charges of Rs 100 were added to the net amount and there was a difference of INR 100 which was applicable to your order. As informed, I will talk to the concerned department for the same and get you an answer shortly. Kindly let me know if you need any further assistance. i am happy to inform u that i have transfered money to weizmann account thru cash deposit once again. This time, instead of calling it “abhishek”, the bank has called it “prabhishek”. But it is one and same thing – a cash deposit of Rs 38700. Repeat – instead of calling it “cash deposit”, they have called it “NEFT cash deposit”, so that weizmann can process it !! You can check it at your end as well – the credit is there in ur indus-ind bank account

Hi Mrudula, I am a legal activist by profession, and i am simply amazed by the lack of processes at doorstepforex and also the lack of coordination between various departments. 1. At around 1130 am yesterday, i deposited CASH directly into the weizmann account, scanned the receipt, and sent to this same email address. The amount was Rs 48,500/- 2. Almost immediately, i got a confirmation from nithyanand (verbally) that you have received the funds. 3. At 1 pm, i got a telephone call from Weizmann local office (“Akshatha”) that they have rceived instructions to “punch” my account with reload of 2495 AED 4. I had wanted to reach out to doorstepforex for some extra load, so tried to reach your landline no between 1.30 and 2.30 pm – no response. Also sent some 3 mails, since it was urgent (as the AXis bank branch closes at 3.30 pm) 5. Finally, at about 310, I got Nityanand on the line. He said there is some confusion as to how to treat my cash deposit. I confirmed that “deposit into your account”, whether it has come from a simple cash deposit OR a NEFT cash deposit, is one and the same. However, he said the back-end team still has to revert on whether any charges are to be levied or not ( he mentioned 100 or 150). The point clearly being – the bank has not levied any charges. However, doorstepforex wants to levy “penalty” on customer ( !!!), but inspite of the same, i said “Go ahead. Pl process my txn asap” 6. Between 4 pm and 7 pm, I was on 3-4 more calls with Nithyanand, who assured me that my txn will get completed by eod irrespective. I also sent an RBI circular on NEFT cash, and confirmed to Nithya that i shall deposit more cash once again the next day, but this time thru “NEFT Cash deposit” !!! 7. At 10 pm, after having got no SMS or email on txn closure I sent this mail asking for status 8. Today morning at 10 am, i get a mail from Mrudula that “payment has not been reflected in account” !!! ——————- I would love to have your payments team PROVE that they have not got the payment into the weizmann forex account at Axis bank (account ending 6055). Alternately, i can visit Axis bank and PROVE otherwise, with full details and audit trial and ledger entry and account statement entry records (of course, all this will involve lot of my time, and if I am forced to do this, I will make sure we get into a proper legal wrangle). Meanwhile, would love Ms Mrudula to call me on my mobile : 9886730012 or my landline 080-41697474. I would also be happy to be connected with your line manager to escalate the “lie” given by your backend team that “payment not reflecting”. I also hope that it is ok to involve your CEO or senior functionary in this, as a case study. This will also help Doorstepforex to get their processes better in place.Grateful if you can send me the email id, or should be obtain the same from other sources ? 17/11/19, 8:20 pm – Sathish: AS PER MY LONG CHAT WITH WARREN TWO DAYS BACK ( IE 28 NOV), AND AS PER HIS COMMITMENT TO SEND ME A CONFIRMATION MAIL REGARDING FULL REFUND OF MY LICENCE FEES FOR EASEUS DATA RECOVERY PRODUCT, I AM STILL TO RECEIVE THE CONFIRMATION EMAIL PL SEND ME THE MAIL ASAP AND CLOSE THE TRANSACTION, PLEASE !!!

To answer your questions about my refund request : 1. Data was lost when i accidentally deleted the files from their folder which was in my main pdf folder. The next day (and without being aware), i ran ccleaner which further deleted them from the recycle bin 2. I answered the second question above itself. Data was lost from my desktop in a folder 3. I did NOT make any changes to my source drive, but tried easeus recovery. When i ran the program, it showed me the lost pdf files. So i purchased the software accordingly. But after purchase, and after i ran the program fully, i copied the recovered files to a external hard drive as per your instructions. When i tried to open the files, NONE of the files opened. Each and every pdf file was corrupted, and it said “Error opening”. I have attached a few screenshots since u are asking for it. Once again reiterating – Pl process my refund asap

CII Institute of Logistics is happy to organize a Training Workshop on ‘Advance Inventory Management’. The objective of this workshop is to help organizations to manage inventory in this dynamic industry situation. The new dimension of space (location) has been added to the elements of timing and quantity in the inventory management domain. It is important to be able to create a policy on ‘where’ to hold inventory besides the traditional decisions of when and how much. Also important is to have a sound knowledge of the standard global practices. This program will precisely deliver solutions for these very pertinent problems faced by industries. Workshop Highlights · Balancing forecasts and production planning with inventory · Why inventory is important for top management · Mathematical inventory models · Designing inventory policy · Inventory Control and Inventory Audit The Workshop would be handled by Mr Pradeep Khetan, a renowned consultant and expert in Supply Chain Management, Inventory Management, Sales & Operations Planning and Warehouse Management with over 35 years of rich experience. What the algorithms don’t know about Mr Most Compatible REGA JHA Instagram took a while to accept that I was really over my ex. He had just looked at a photo I’d posted and, for the first time in months, it didn’t bring him to the top of its list of people who’d seen it. His name, with its too-familiar brown-blue icon, was some spots down now, below colleagues and cousins. Up near the top of the list, two new circles had been promoted — an old friend whose DMs were newly laden with fire emojis; a woman I’d followed after some promising banter on Hinge. Finally, I thought. It’s official. I must really have moved on, now that the algorithm knows I’ve moved on. My phone screen, that trusty dark mirror, reflects me in less subtle ways too. Zomato knows I like to order momos to my best friend’s home and ice-cream to my ex’s. My YouTube recommendations give away how much I’m fixating on improved sleep habits. One app tells me I’m dehydrated, another that my period starts tomorrow, a third lists all the books I’ve read this year and, more sassily, which ones I’ve abandoned. We’ve never been better equipped to live out the Delphic maxim, “Know Thyself”. All the knowledge about our selves is right there, painstakingly inventoried. The scope of our personhood is mapped out in zeros and ones on Silicon Valley servers. Billions of us turn to our phones to mediate all sorts of impulses — to eat, read, masturbate, travel, call our moms, look up symptoms — and in turn, those apps track our instincts rigorously. Including the searches on Incognito Mode. Including the 3am texts. For our every double-tap, scroll, and swipe, the code whirrs and comes to know us a bit better, to reflect us with increasing precision. Depending on who’s mined them, the secrets we reveal in our online behaviour are used to hook us, advertise to us, radicalise us, or arrest us. If we’re lucky, we’ll just be played our new favourite song on Spotify and be served the perfect New Years’ Eve dress in an Instagram ad for a Chinese e-commerce site. If we’re not — who knows? Maybe we’ll find that living in a 24/7 state of self-surveillance, being fed hyper-personalised content tailored to ignite unspoken desires turns us into perfect consumers and perennially discontented people. I try not to think too much about it. I fail. I’m not alone in being obsessed. Which of us now hasn’t wondered if our TVs and phones are listening to us? (How else did Facebook know to toss up a blender ad the same week the mixie broke?) “The Algorithms” are starting to feel god-like — disembodied forces that we don’t see or understand, but which we know we’re being watched and shaped by. For our part, we do our best to win their favour. Across political party offices, ad agencies, and newsrooms, the best minds are brainstorming, day in and out, how to “trend”. Influencers are swapping tips at parties like superstitions. I know because I’ve done it. Still, there are things the algorithms don’t know. A few weeks ago, swiping my emptiness left and right on Hinge, my chest pulled into itself as a familiar face showed up. It was a photo I had taken. Shouldn’t the app have known? That we’d matched once before, exchanged numbers, texted through his week at a friend’s farmhouse in Coorg, then met once, met twice, met every day for weeks, grown close over gin & tonics until we had a favourite Bandra bar where the waiters knew to lead us to our favourite table? That we’d met one another’s families, left toothbrushes and chargers at one another’s homes, drunkenly glimpsed potential forevers and Swiggy’d cheap burgers for the hangover? That two years went by before we found ourselves snapping more, texting our exes while the other slept, scrolling silently in the blue blaze of our respective screens while our g&ts sweated between us? Hinge doesn’t know that one day in February we fought all night and knew by sunrise that we’d break up. All it knows is that we are “Most Compatible”. I take a screenshot and WhatsApp it to him with a “LOL”. He LOLs back. We remain broken up. It’s a rare moment of triumph over the all-seeing, allknowing algorithms. It feels… really shitty. We live among all sorts of new heartaches and amusements, born of code getting minor details about us wrong. A Facebook ‘friend-versary’ video for a friend who’s no longer alive. Engagement photoshoots on your Discover tab when you’ve just begun to question monogamy. Ads for baby shoes after a miscarriage. I’m trying to find some solace in these moments of algorithmic lapse. It’s the internet revealing that it can’t (yet) know us, provide for us, like other people do. It can’t account for the breadth of our hopes and madnesses. What would be really terrifying, I think, is if the algorithms never messed up. If we reached full predictability, repeating patterns, never changing. In a data swarm where nearly every recommendation, every autoplay, is too close to perfect, the glitches are a reminder that we can’t be flattened into a composite of things we’ve liked and said before. We are more than a sum of the people we’ve already been, ever susceptible to surprising ourselves. It’s nice to be reminded that there’s something persistently complex about being a person, still, something un-mappable in zeros and ones — the unbearably human possibility of meeting Mr Most Compatible, running it all to the ground, learning, moving on.

as u know, rajani and myself already have an individual health insurance plan of 1cr ( manipal cigna). Today, i took another 50L ( gp policy of iima, by aditya birla insurance) – floater for all 4 of us.

Premium is extremely low : 19k per year including GST.

unfortunately prema is not eligible as addon ( cancer)

Did not add my inlaws for this gp plan because premium came to 78K for max 25L, and they already have unlimited CGHS over so rajani vetoed.

we are all aware that though we may give or attach a lot of importance to srimad ramayanam referred to as ramayana in general shri mahabharata referred to as mahabharata in general or to the puranas of them srimad-bhagavatam or sri vishnu puranam both of these become very very important so be it ramana mahabharata vishnu purana or bhagavata we attach a lot of importance to them we either go into the para mode wherein we recite or we give pravachanams discourses on them nevertheless to all these scriptures that we revere follow and respect the taru the root is the vedas so vedas become very very important to sanatana dharma in other words if there is no vedas there is no sanatana dharma so our purvacharyas our preceptors have opined that conservation preservation and propagating vedas is the utmost important duty for every person who follows and respects sanatana dharma that being said we need to understand what vedas generally mean the dhatu shabdam for the vedas states it is that source which helps us know so the moment we say to know read vedas vedas become the source of knowledge hence vedas are nothing but big archives of knowledge compiled to us given to us by our rishis interestingly when we discuss siddhantam philosophy we deal with three essential tools one is pratyaksham perception second second is anumanam when we speak of anumanam it is inference third is shabdam shabdashastram is the vedas because it is sound we may be a bit confused what is sound and why is vedas related to sound please do understand that many acharyas many scholars have opined that to say that vedas are in samskritam may be technically wrong though we have shrimad ramayanam shri mahabharata srimad-bhagavatam sri vishnu puranam then the manudar mashastram then the samhitas then the smritis then we have the carviums of karlidas sri harsha and so on they are all in samskritam there is no doubt and the language in vedas has inspired valmiki vyasa the rishis khalidasa bharavi and so on to compose in sanskrit so samskritam as a language is very close to the bhasa the language in our vedas so what language are the vedas so to say that that is samskritam is wrong you can say samskritam looks very very close to the language of the vedas so what is the language of the vedas the language of the vedas is the sound sound dominates the letters or the words or the sentences we use in vedas why this is an example that i often cite let us take the hindi language in that we might have come across the word ka la kal what is the meaning of kal kal either means yesterday or tomorrow means i had come yesterday or i came yesterday so it means i shall come tomorrow so the same spelling color the same pronunciation kal becomes either yesterday or tomorrow based on the context aya tha is pastons so kal should mean yesterday anga is future tense so it should mean tomorrow in most languages we will attribute the meaning to any word either knowing the word or in the context let us take english language peace i say what is the spelling of peace some may say p-i-e-c-e some may say p-e-a-c-e are both the words correct yes what is p e a c e peace means shanti so if somebody wants peace that means they want quietitude they want to be in bliss that is peace suppose somebody says give me a piece of the cake then it is p i e c e so how do we understand what spelling we have to put the pronunciation is the same then we again base it on the context if i say give me a piece then the spelling cannot be p i e c e because before that you cannot put the indefinite article a i want peace this spelling cannot be p i e c e because in p e a c it is an abstract noun so you generally don’t put a indefinite article before that a or n so we have seen the hindi language where for the same word same spelling same pronunciation there are two meanings so we base it on the context in english language we have seen that there is a same pronunciation but two different words that is spellings so we again base it on what articles we use most languages that we know international languages or the languages we speak in india is all based on the context of that particular paragraph then understanding the context we interpret that particular line but in vedas it is not so if i say ajaha it means brahma it means goat so ha you put two dots in samskritam right so ajaha either means brahma or the goat but how will i know where it is denoted as brahman where it is denoted as a goat based on the sound so if i rise it high then it becomes brahma if i go down it becomes good so brahma and goat will be seated besides each other they will be waiting for the sound where i increase and where i decrease that is why most of the research scholars and our acharyas have opined that do not say that vedas are in samskartham they are in a certain language and samskritam is highly influenced by that language it seems so much so that both of them are inseparable yes but the vedic language is more derived based on sound that being said how have our rishis who have given us the vedic tics compiled them who are these rishis for certain mandalas for certain prashanams for certain condoms we know that there are rishis but in certain cases we do not know what is the name of that rishi because the rishis have always felt that their names should never be used they have never kept the copyright with them they have thought that something which is beneficial to the world should be given for free i should not enjoy that exclusive copyrights one second thing the rishis did not compose the vedas they could decipher the sound in the ecosystem and that sound then interspersed with the letters gave us the vedic mantras or the suktams so the rishis did have the ability bestowed upon by bestowed on them by the paramatma to decipher the sound hence vedas are in a sound language and we do not know when it was compiled so it is time immemorial and the vedic texts have been given to us in various formats certain formats are in the gaddirupam certain are in padhyarupam so padhya in samskritam denotes poetry so rigvedam is in the form of padyam yajurvedam is is in the form of gaddyam prose and when we convert certain mantras of the rigveda as given to us by the rishis in a musical format in ghana rupam it becomes samavedam so have the rigvedic mantras been used to convert to samavedam yes there is this line which says so here they say how certain mantras being recited in a certain way we will use the word rick because it is it is generally uh told as a rick for rigveda so certain ricks when they are sung in a certain format becomes sama vedham so we have understood that there is a poetic form to the rix so then it becomes rigveda that when being sung becomes sama vedam when there is prose which is gaddyam it becomes yajurvedam when certain mantras have been compiled to us after being chosen from samam it becomes here we have the name of the rishi who has given to us otherwise for the first three vedas we do not know who is the rishi though we do say for this particular mandala this is the rishi that came much later but we do not know who are the set of rishis who came and deciphered and gave it to us hence vedas are time immemorial when i say time immemorial some of you may be wondering so do you say that before creation it was there i am not getting into those details all that i am saying is we do not know who compiled them for us when we do not know who did when it is time immemorial so it’s called anadi ananta limitless vedam now coming to the vedas the essence of vedas is the pranavam which is often denoted and known as omkaram omkaram is a unique sound which is found in the vedas that has three syllables associated with it it is so these sounds put together become pranavam or which is often referred to as omkaram now let us see how the three sounds together which forms umkaram is often referred to as the essence of the vedas rigvedam in the first mandala has the first s begins with the sound akaram rigveda ends with the sound susah sati which is e ikaram so rigveda begins with akaram and ends with ekaram let us see what yajur veda begins with so it begins what is the last mantra of the yajurvedam it ends with samudro bandhu o so it begins with e and ends with o rigveda begins with a and ends with e so rigveda begins with a ends with e yajur veda begins with e and ends in o so rigvedam to yajurvedam is akaram to ukaram now let us understand samavedam samavedam ends or has the unique saw singing format associated with it in the traditional classical music pattern we have denoted ragas under categories they are referred to as melakartha ragas when we divide when we denote them through a circle and divide them alongside the center we get two different halves the first set of ragas the second set of ragas what are they they are s will be denoted by ma . pratima dhyamuragas will be denoted by ma . so essentially to split the ragas we use sound for example so [Applause] so if you look at the madhyamam it has the sound so for the classical music we use madhyamam because that is the middle of the swaras shadjam rishabham gandharam sariga then you have makaram madhyamam then you have got sarigama pa so in the middle comes madhyama so which has a sound ma so rigvedas rick when sung in a certain format becomes sama so samaganam or sama vedam is singing for singing we have to use music in music we have got madhyamam madhyama’s sound is yima so ma makaram is in samavedam akaram so these three vedas put together become pranavam now let us now understand how sound becomes very very important for the vedas there is one praji in slokam a so what here they say is to a person who has to walk into a large hall which is dark the only way for him to proceed further is to carry a lamp in his hand the lamp will show will will give that light and will show him that way so swaram becomes very um there is one anecdote which is often cited to bring forth the importance of reciting the vedic meters with the proper sound it goes like this mantra swaratha there is one story that the spiritual guide of the devas especially to indra was brihaspati at one point in time brhaspati and indra had a tiff because of which brihaspati left his position he relinquished his position and went away but keeping a spiritual guide was very essential to indra so he brought forth trishiras the son of twasta as his spiritual guide it did so happen that at one point in time he saw the increasing power of the asuras so he waged a war with trishires at that point in time twashta who wanted to avenge this attitude of indra because indra was in the winning spree so twashta performed the agnyam for the benefit of his son and as he was performing the ign he had to give the havis to agni he had to say oh through this sacrifice i invoke the blessings of agni please give more power to my son so that he will win over his enemy indra indra indra was the enemy to his son indra satru so indra was the very enemy to his son so let the power of my son who’s fighting indra increased many fold times was his thought but while he was giving the harvest he instead of increasing the syllable at the first letter and decreasing it the second letter he did the vice versa for the word indra shatru so the moment he did that after he uttered this word the power of indra increased many fold times we may be wondering why the word is the same indra shatro but if the sound is changed instead of industry through as indrasha through if you go up then it means let the power of the of that enemy whose indra who is actually fighting my son increased many full times initially the power was to go to his son but because of the wrong pronunciation and wrong ucharanam charanam it went to indra and indra could easily defeat tashta’s son in the battle so the shloka says did you all wonder or did you all think that indra was the one who killed this tashta santrishidas no it was not a indra who killed it was the wrong ucharanam wrong sounding of the father which became vajrayana and killed the son savage vedic book either you buy you can buy it online or whether you want to download it as a pdf format please check certain letters will not have any symbol above and under them they are all udatas you don’t have to shout you don’t have to go baritone it is in the middle udata then anuddata anuddata is it is not udata that means you have to go much down so it will be marked with a with a horizontal line you have to go down then there are certain letters where you have to go up that is denoted by a single line above that letter it is called swarita there are certain letters which need the double stretching so it is denoted by two parallel standing lines above that letter then there is a fifth sound called as prachaya so all this put together these are the five ways with which the sounding pattern is associated with the vedas udata now please also note that rick in a certain format becomes sama vedam now for the rigveda and yejur vedam we have seen udata swarita deer ghaswarita anuddatan these three give rise to the seven swara sapta swaras this is how the shlokam goes for the letter that goes up from swarita came shadjam comes madhyamam and comes panchama from udata comes nishadam and gandharam from anudata comes rishabham so these are the seven letters seven swaras that come from these three sounds typical sounds the ancient sounds of the vedas now as we have discussed in simple terms about what is vedam what is that sound pattern how important is the sound pattern you are using the anecdote of indra shatru word we must also note that these patterns which are associated with the vedas the vedic mantras may not be essentially associated with some of the upanishads nevertheless upanishads form an integral part of the vedas one way how we have classified vedas is based on gaddam padyam ghanam and so on so we have rik sama and atharvanam so this is one way of seeing it there is one place in srimad ramayanam where hanuman is described in our previous course of bharatiya sara bodhani level as well we have seen this rama looks to lakshmana and praises hanuman’s eloquence he says who has mastered the ajurveda even to a person who is adept in samavedam who becomes a viddwan vidusha prabhti that person will not be able to match the eloquence of hanuman is what rama tells to lakshmana so vedic vedas become very important to us now we have got rik sama each of the vedas have four divisions in them brahmana the three rows of the four vedas together constitute a condom when we see the fourth part which is the nyana condom there is this ancient verse there are people who give prime importance to karma condom brahmanam samhita the first three portions those people who give importance to the nyana condom which is the upanishads both together karma condom following people nyana condom following people devadanti mahatmanam those mahatmas together say krishnam dharmam sanathanam sanatana dharma is nothing but krishna himself krishnam dharmam sanatanam now that being said we need to understand what in the vedas or karma condom are we going to discuss instead of discussing some random slokas or random suktas or random portions of the vedas it was felt by my humble self that we could discuss certain popular regularly practiced regularly recited and extremely revered portions of the vedas called as suktam’s that which is being said well is suktam it is being said well so amongst the sukthams that we know suktam is extremely popular very highly recited and revered by people by devotees across the country and in the diaspora so we shall discuss so in each of the vedas this purusa suktam is found it is very interesting that purusa suktam is one suktam which is found in all the four vedas you have got this in rigveda yajurveda sama veda and atharvaveda and in yajur veda you have got in both the yajur vedas shuklai jurvaidam and krishna yajurvedam just that the number of mantras could vary in some it could be and some it could be in some it could be and some it could be just seven but purusa suktam is found in all the four vedas what is the greatness of purusa they say bhagavad-gita amongst the vedic hymns that we all know the best is the purusa-suktam veda dharma amongst dharma sastras that we know manu dharma sastra is the greatest says the sloka amongst the puranas that we know that we have been that have been given to us by the rishis vaishnava vishnu purana is the best so we have to understand that purusha suktam is a very important portion of the vedas while we discuss purusha-suktam i am going to tell you the testimonials those places where purusa suktam is highly revered padma puranam says do we have evidence of that yes in srimad bhagavad-gita when bhumi devi suffers at the hands of the demons she goes and seeks the asylum at brahma so the shloka goes like in the form of a cow she goes and weeps before brahma now she goes and weeps in the form of a cow before brahma here goes up as they all approach the lord they start singing praise of the lord through purusa s of the lord through but who is this purusa we have understood the importance of vedas we have understood the divisions and the vedas two by two matrix or four by four matrix and all we have understood sir but who is this purusha purusha pratipadhyam so who has been mentioned in the prusa suktas is nothing but parabrahma upanishad so the one who is denoted by purusha suktam which is found in the vedas and the essence of the upanishads are the same what is the greatness of purusha suktam purusha mahatm kim what is the greatness we understand that there are many commentators to the vedic mantras so the first amongst them is uvatacharya who is said to have lived between and a.d next we have the great acharya called as bhattavas karacharya works have been commented by the later commentators so he is very genuine when i say genuine he very much lived bhattabhaskaracharya lived around the now going to sayanacharya one of the greatest commentators who gave the commentary for all the vedas he lived between the th and the th century mahi dharacharya lived between the th and the th century sriranga lived between and a.d now how do we understand whom this word purusha denotes bhagavan like how agni is denoted by certain words so like how purusa denotes vasudeva the word vasudeva means vasudeva how it denotes krishna was it popular then is a question here we have panini sutra which says vasudeva and that aphorism has been commented upon by patanjali the one who gives happiness the one who bestows auspiciousness the now one is so generous magnanimous gives and grants whatever the devotee legitimately asks for is called as purusha puru bahusano then there is another meaning says the commentator muktaio the one who gives this equal anubhavam to both then shankara the one who grants moksham is called as purusha so in the th nama we have seen th nama in the th rama purusha the one who is very pure the one who is very clean the one who is very holy is called as purusha sarvapa sadhana the one who has the ability to burn away the sins committed by his devotees next is the madhva sannyasi who says the one who creates sustains and protects all his creation so he says he goes on to say and as he we continue down the one who goes ahead let us assume there is a man and the woman his wife walking together who is purusa we will say purusha means the man no the one who walks in the front is called purusha if that lady walks ahead of that man she becomes purusa so pura the one who fills us the devotees with all strength is called as pipe the one who lies inside the township either inside the shariram or inside the jeevathma is purif vishnu is treated the one who is treated by the purusha word is none but hari says this particular shloka now there is this prashna the one who is the inner spirit to the son is contemplated by the letter pranavam the one who meditates on this purusa is freed from all the sins so we have got a purusa shabdam which denotes narayana or vishnu so beginning from the sound in the vedas to the interpretation and the meaning given based on the vedas we have seen how much of importance is attached to this particular vedic recitation now in purusa sukta we as discussed before we find that it is found in all the four vedas nevertheless the excerpts that we are going to witness is from the purusa sukta which is very popular from the krishna yejur veda so that is the purusa sukta’s meaning that we are going to see the first mantra goes like this with so it is plural in nature says the commentator so hasra denotes plural in nature what did i say for sahasra it means thousand i said so thousand is plural one the number one is only singular if i say i have one pen it is singular i have thousand pins it is plural so what is so surprising that he is saying here is he says asan kyani shir shani shiramsi now while we are describing purusa in the vedas rishis have said have wanted us to think do not restrict the word sahasra in purusa suktam to the number thousand because if i say that this paramatma this lord has thousand heads then if i show some other creation which has got thousand one third then that creation will say i am better than paramatma because he has thousand heads and i’ve got thousand one so this thousand or thousand one doesn’t denote the number it denotes infinite it denotes that which is limitless suppose if somebody is serving me vegetable while i’m eating i say no no very little just serve me very little instead of using the word very little in the indian context we will say dalla will they count one aloo and two aloos and put it there no when i say two or one it denotes give me very little they know based on our intake what is little similarly parabrum is denoted by the word sahasrara shirisha to say he is infinite and not to restrict him to the number thousand atta sahasrara if it is a superficial explanation of the vedas then one need not attend this course at all if we are participating in this course be it me who is also a participant be it you who is also a participant we need to go slightly deep into the vedas to go to the depth of the vedas we need to understand the commentaries given by uvatacharya mahidharacharya bhattabhaskara these five have commented on the purusha suktam now i am reading out from their commentaries now there is another line in the commentary sahasrara itself is called in certain texas sahasrara denotes thousands and thousands and thousands of heads infinite what does the next word mean the one who has got a thousand ice again it means thousands and thousands of eyes let us imagine we are restricting only two thousand so there are thousand heads so thousand eyes that means there is only one eye in that face to imagine such a face itself is tough imagine thousand heads with one eye each it will be so tough so here akshi means ice thousands and thousands of ice now what does the word i denote here i is that particular sense organ that we use for seeing so for perception so how and whom could this particular word sahasrarakshaha denote was a question that i took up as a project in the south of india in the state of tamil nadu close to its capital chennai is another important town called as kanchipuram kanchi is famous for its silk sarees besides silk sarees kanchipuram is also famous for a dozen over a dozen number of large temples in those temples kanchi varadaraja’s swami temple is very famous and is highly followed and respected in kanchipuram in lord varadaraja’s swami temple it is believed by our purvacharyas that the lord there is the best ophthalmologist he grants people the eyes to see so we have certain anecdotes to it during the times of ramanuja thousand years before when ramanuja was an extremely well-read and practicing vaishnavite the king who was a shy white wanted to kill ramanuja so he asked ramanuja to come to his code but now knowing the plan of the king kuresha the son of the student of ramanuja felt that it in order to protect his teacher he has to assume the role of his teacher and go to the court as he went to the court there was a debate between the king and croatia and at the end of which kuresha’s eyes were removed so he became blind on his return to meet ramanuja rama just started crying and was not consolable at all he said for my sake you have lost your eyes so please consider my request go to varadaraja of kanchipuram and ask for your eyes so as croatia came to this sanctum sanctorum of lord varadaraja he sang this verse so he says like this the one who is on this of karisha please give me hey kari giri hey karigiri vasa hey karisha give me the ice so he asks the lord to bestow him with good eyesight prior to him there was another life history of his acharya called as kanchi purna kanchi purna had a grandfather who was blind in order to request the lord to grant him eyes kanchi purna carried his grandfather on his shoulders went to kanchipuram to request the lord here is the verse that describes it so please grant us the ice so that my grandfather can see you so be it to kanchi puruna’s father be to ramanuja sisya called as kuresha there have been immense instances in the puranas there is this charitram of ah of a rishi called as uttatiya who was married to mamata as mamata was pregnant with the child of uttathya and uttathya had gone out of the house uttathya’s younger brother who was brhaspati wanted to have a relationship with mamata but the child in the womb and the mother who was carrying the child resisted brahsmati felt very humiliated upon this resistance though he was not aware that his act itself was very condemnable so he cursed that the child should never see the light of this world so the child was born blind he was called deer ghatamas so this deer gatamas is said to have prostrated to the lord of kanchipuram to obtain his eyes so that lord who gives us eyesight is now denoted by the word sahasra very interesting in our purana sahasraksa generally denotes indra because indra was cursed by gautama maharishi because he had an immoral relationship an unethical relationship with gautama’s wife called as ahalya so gautama curses that there should be a thousand private parts of the woman visible on the body of indra but indra went to the dwipam to the island which is between bharatam and sri lanka called and prayed to god as parvati who appeared as indrakshi and transformed all the thousand private parts of the woman visible on indra’s body into ice so he is called as so he transformed all of them so that’s the sahasraraksa word denote indra no it denotes the one who has got thousands and thousands and thousands of eyes so this is sahasraraksa next comes sahastra path again thousands and thousands of legs it could also denote the sun the commentator says could also denote the sun because as the sun travels in the sky he comes with the thousands of rays so it could mean the one who has got thousands of rays who is the son now what do these three words denote sahasri rishaf purusha that purusha who has got sahasrasiras saha saraksha the one who has got thousand eyes sahasrapath the one who has got thousand legs what do these three denote here the one who has got thousand legs denotes that he has he has got the quality of gatapam he can go around anywhere next is sahasrara the one who has got the ability to see everything from anywhere that is supports the eyes the nose the ears the mouth and the teeth so does the lord support the entire character of where is he what is he doing the one who is measuring all the words but where is he he must be somewhere else he must be very big no no the one whom you are searching the one who has measured the words is nowhere else the one who is found in the shanghula what does the shanghula mean here the shanghula is being said as the one who is found in the distance between grains arranged one after the other so if we have got the shanghulam it is arranged one the grain is arranged one after the other the length that comes between the first grain and the last grain is dashangulum so he is found in the shangulum the next meaning given is the shanghulam also means that he is found between the upper join the lower jaw ah i open the distance between the upper jaw and the lower jaw that is the shanghulam so the lord is found as the shanghulam in all these places next the shang gulam also means the beginning of the forehead to the bottom of the chin so he is either found here here that is the shanghulam or one after the other the grain arranged the next part is he is found between brahmarandram here is where the atma can exit if it has to go take the st part called as sushumnandi and here is a khirdaya kamalam right next to the diaphragm that is a small believed to be a sukshma subtle inverted here essentially means the distance that is why to so show that he has pervaded everywhere and is also found in dashang gulam the lord in krishna vataram opened his mouth and showed the entire universe in it so that is the shanghulam so the purusa stays there so says this particular shloka

The global race for messaging supremacy has long seemed like an uneven contest. WhatsApp, with over 1.6 billion monthly active users (MAU), looks almost uncatchable for players like Telegram and Signal. But the encrypted service Telegram, which has over 200 million users globally and which is patronised by journalists, public officials and protest movements, is now gaining a huge following in India. It has seen nearly 65% increase in user count this year; the MAU figure (Android alone) stood at around 2.9 crore in September. Small and medium-sized enterprises and startups, which use the app for marketing and customer engagement, are driving this bump in interest. Edtech firms use it to reach test-prep users, companies in other sectors rely on it for influencer marketing, and small businesses love its unique application programming interface (API) and bot feature to engage with customers and analyse data. According to Prabhu Ram, head, Industry Intelligence Group at CyberMedia Research, businesses prefer Telegram because it marries capabilities of WhatsApp and Snapchat — it’s secure, private and accessible. Access across multiple devices and no restrictions on the number of group members and file sizes are also a big selling point. Fantasy sports platform HalaPlay uses the service as an influencer board. The freedom of having unlimited members on the app’s broadcast feature ‘Channels’ helps the company maximise its reach. HalaPlay co-founder and CEO Swapnil Saurav said in the past two years, a single influencer had brought in, through Telegram, nearly 40,000 users for the fantasy sports platform. Edtech sector is the largest adopter of Telegram in India. This is because a large section of the companies’ target audience — tech professionals and candidates preparing for competitive exams — are on the app. Awanish, assistant vicepresident (content marketing) at Edureka, said the nature of engagement among tech professionals in the age group 25-34 on Telegram was more focused and therefore it constituted targeted traffic for them. “As a business strategy, Telegram helps me in branding my startup and getting the word out about my offerings,” he said. Edureka’s official Telegram channel, which has over 6,520 followers, offers latest updates on trending technologies and information on upcoming batches. The company hosts seven Telegram groups for DevOps, Python, Java and data science. Online tutoring platform Vedantu uses Telegram to send notifications on sessions and classes, solve doubts and address users’ grievances. Anand Prakash, the firm’s co-founder and academic head, said Telegram’s API and bot capabilities enabled businesses to interact with users, and data analytics was a standout feature, something WhatsApp for Business lacked. “Up to 200 users are generally online per hour, with high levels of interaction and engagement,” Prakash said. Exam prep firm Oliveboard found unique users in tier-2 and 3 towns who generally cannot afford the sophisticated and expensive paid solutions of an edtech platform. “Most UPSC toppers go off Facebook, WhatsApp and other platforms, but are active on Telegram the whole time. This is a key indicator of the app’s dominance in the exam prep segment,” said Oliveboard co-founder Abhishek Patil. Oliveboard’s Telegram channel has over 16,000 members. Pick Your Trail, a Chennai-based travel tech startup, began using Telegram about three years ago as a concierge platform to talk to customers and send them information, including vouchers. Later, it developed its own app for the purpose. “The flexible and open-source APIs of Telegram helped us pull in data analytics of customer interactions and improve the quality of engagement,” said cofounder and chief technology officer Srinath Shankar. “Our customers were happy doing it on a separate platform rather than clubbing it with their social interactions on WhatsApp.” At one point, Pick Your Trail’s Telegram group saw engagement from over 500 customers a month. During the vacation season in December last year, it clocked up almost 100 concurrent customer interactions a day. The cryptocurrency and blockchain community also swears by encrypted service’s value. Malta-based cryptocurrency exchange OKEx opened its Indian Telegram group in June 2018 before formally setting up Indian operations in June this year. “We chose Telegram because it gathers more cryptospecific community members compared to any other messaging apps,” a company spokesperson said. “In comparison with social networking platforms like Twitter and Facebook, Telegram behaves better in instant communication or group discussion.” The group has over 4,500 members, and the company says there are daily interactions with most members. Telegram ranks higher among users concerned about privacy. “The platform’s encryption protocol, MTProto, creates a framework in which messages sent are completely scrambled and masked while in transit between the sender and recipient devices,” said Rahul Tyagi, co-founder of enterprise cybersecurity firm Lucideus. The app is having a moment in the mainstream, thanks to the large Channel sizes that support countless members, file transfers as large as 1GB, and Super-Groups that can accommodate up to 1 lakh users and mask their numbers. Patel Wealth Advisors, a stock broking and wealth management firm that shares stock tips and related advice, has around 1.7 lakh subscribers on one of its channels, Minish_Patel, and an average post reach of around 83,900. A company spokesperson said the channel was started in September 2017 to educate and empower retail individual investors. “We are running two channels — one with 4.2 lakh members and second with 1.66+ lakh,” the spokesperson said, adding the count goes up every day. But the same features that score high on convenience have also prompted concerns about piracy, especially in the case of entertainment content and education material. Industry watchers and edtech players STOI spoke to said the platform posed a threat to book publishing and pureplay content companies. Two top channels on the platform, in terms of number of subscribers, are dedicated to Hindi and Hollywood movies, according to Telegram Data Analytics. Lucideus’ Tyagi said the ‘secret chats’ feature, which was introduced recently and which leaves no trail of messages anywhere on the server, making them disappear from devices after some time, had sparked security concerns as it could be misused for hateful or extremist propaganda.

THE IDEA: Legistify is a legal technology platform, which seeks to make legal services accessible and transparent for everyone. It can act as an online marketplace or a legal concierge platform for individuals and enterprises. It has a network of over 7,000 pre-verified and scrutinised lawyers from 300 cities and 700 districts of the country. It also has a do-it-yourself (DIY) legal agreement drafting platform. The firm is essentially the ‘Uber of legal world’ that helps you find the right lawyer. EUREKA MOMENT: In his final year at BITS Pilani, Akshat noticed that people generally face several difficulties in legal matters. From drafting to advisory, everything was always based on referrals. He launched a pilot project which could help people complete the paperwork with greater ease. His DIY platform allowed people to post questions and get answers from lawyers. Within a week, it received 600 queries. “People generally approach a lawyer through a reference without knowing his/her specialisation or the complexity of their own case. After the initial response to our small pilot project, I realised there was a need for a platform which could connect people with lawyers, help them in paperwork, explain the process and offer sound legal advice,” Akshat said. EARLY DAYS: In 2017, the team started working on the DIY legal agreement platform. It automates the process of preparing legal papers without a lawyer’s intervention. But Akshat wanted it to do more. “We wanted to remove location barriers so people could access good legal counsel. A person from a far-flung town should be able to seek legal advice in Delhi,” he said. The team started getting lawyers on board, turning the platform into a marketplace for legal help. Legistify was launched in 2018. BIGGEST CHALLENGE: Creating legal awareness was a big task. Legal tech was non-existent in India, so was the concept of looking for an advocate online. Globally, however, the industry was booming. The second challenge was to standardise legal services in terms of the process and prices. “There was no standard price or a timeline for the process. Approaching lawyers for this standardisation was a challenge, but they agreed to it eventually,” Akshat said. WHERE THE STARTUP IS NOW: Legistify has over 7,000 lawyers on its network and over 1 million registered users. It has handled more than 10,000 legal matters. The Noida-based firm is building a lawyer profile section, which will list details such as the number of cases an advocate has fought, average hearings and the win-loss ratio. The information will help people make a data-based decision while choosing a lawyer. Legistify, which had two rounds of funding, plans to open satellite offices in more cities and smaller towns.

On Monday mornings, you may not get a cab to work or the nearest metro station soon enough by firing the app. This commuting annoyance will most likely reoccur in the evening as you head home or to a supermarket to pick up essentials. Affordability is another concern. Cab fares are rising while Uber and Ola try to solve the demand-supply gap. Now, a couple of earlystage startups are trying to address the problem of neighbourhood shuttle or micro-mobility. This is beyond bike-taxi startups, or bike rentals. The idea here is that these startups will move a group of people together for 3-5 km at a cheaper rate than a cab or scooter. New Delhi-based Oye Rickshaw has a fleet of over 1,000 electric rickshaws, while Bengaluru-based Loca has various vehicles on its platform, which is often used by Ola and Uber, to take users to their destination within a neighbourhood. It also uses six-seater vans. While these startups offer services in pockets of a city, metro stations are the first locations they are targeting because of the high frequency of use. “It could be anywhere — a mall, restaurant or temple. But for now, we are restricting the use-case to metro stations and back,” said Loca co-founder Gautam Patil. “If you break up the volume of trips across different distance ranges, in Indian context, 0-1.5 km is walkable or can be covered on a cycle. But beyond that, about 65% of all work-related commute in urban India happens in sub-5-km range.” For these startups, 50% of the rides are generally for first or last mile connections; the rest could be anywhere in the neighbourhood. This is where cost becomes a significant differentiator as cab fares will be high for even such short distances. Mohit Sharma of Oye said app-based cabs charge upwards of Rs 20 per km, while bike taxis Rs 13-15. The fare is Rs 5-8 on bike-sharing platforms. Sharma’s fleet of erickshaw offers a rate of Rs 3-5 per km. Loca charges Rs 15-25 for each ride, for a maximum distance of 5 km. Loca did not disclose ride volumes, but Oye said it had clocked up 2 million rides in the past 10 months. If five people take one e-rickshaw to a location, Oye counts the journey as five rides. Investors are placing bets based on the early traction these firms are getting. Loca has the backing of Stellaris Venture Partners and Fosun, whereas Oye counts Matrix Partners and Snapdeal founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal among its investors. While affordability and quick availability are key factors for customers, the algorithm used by the startups to take people to their destination is also critical. Cab users often complain that pool rides take long detours to accommodate maximum number of riders. “This is the biggest concern for customers; they are not sure how long it will take. Once you give the assurance that your journey time is prefixed, controlled by an algorithm, which will drop you about 50 metres from your final destination, trust is created that this is the platform you need,” Sharma said

17/11/19, 9:14 pm – Sathish: Six ways to make everyone want to open your emails in.pcmag.com How many people open the emails you send? If you maintain an email list for a business, organisation, or personality, you can improve your emails to make them more enticing. The same can be said for anyone who frequently turns to emails for business communication. 1. Deliver what you promise, and be consistent If you’re running an email list, remember that people sign up to receive emails for a reason, whether to get news summaries, exclusive deals, or inside information. Make sure you deliver what you promise every time you send an email. Also, keep the style and tone of the emails same. 2. Spend time on your subject line The subject line may be the most important asset within your control, influencing whether someone will open your email. Spend time on it and try several variations. Make the subject line accurate to the subject matter. Keep it short, catchy and avoid putting questions. How many characters should you use? Advice ranges from about 45 to 90 characters, mostly to keep the subject line visible on mobile devices. 3. Carefully craft the first line of the body Everyone who receives your email will, in theory, see the subject line. Many recipients will also see the first few words of the body in preview. So, if the subject line hooks them, the first line needs to reel them in. Put in some effort into crafting it. The first line of the body should add to the subject line and not be a repetition of it. 4. Customise the ‘from’ name Who sends your emails? If it’s Rishi or Anita from your marketing department and not you, consider putting their name in the ‘from’ line to give your emails a personal touch, if it’s appropriate based on the content. 5. Proofread before you send the email Keep your audience interested in opening future emails by delivering professional content. Have another person proofread it, not only for typos but also for meaning, readability and facts. The proof reader should pay attention to the subject line and the first line of text for length. Click on all the links to verify that they work. 6. Get to the point Another way to keep people interested and increase the odds that they open your emails is to cut to the chase. For example, if your email is pitching a product that your company deals in, give the name of the product, a single line description of it, the availability, and a link to the product’s website. The more you give people what they want, the more likely they are to trust your emails.

My understanding of investment in today’s demanding market scenario means shifting your focus from Active VS Passive to Active & Passive Investing! Let’s decode this statement. Half a century back, investors were oblivious to Passive Investing or Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). However, things have changed drastically now with nearly 50% of the global AUM now being passively managed. India too, is witnessing a small but perceptible shift towards passive investing. As of March 2018, the Indian mutual fund industry had a total AUM of INR 21.36 trillion, of which 3.8% was managed passively. Undoubtedly, a large part of this shift is accredited to GOI and the slew of measures introduced, in addition to EPFO being allowed to invest in these assets. Let’s elaborate the reasons behind retail investors’ migration towards passive investing. Actively managed fund portfolio comprise of stocks from the mandated investment universe. The rationale is to choose stocks that generates alpha and thus outperform the benchmark. On the other hand passive investing entails creating a portfolio same as the composition of the benchmark. According to SPIVA India Scorecard, as on June 30 2018, over a 10-year period, 63% large cap schemes underperformed the S&P BSE 100. With the outperformance of actively managed funds shrinking, the case for passive management has become increasingly compelling. As we all know active fund portfolios are not built overnight but demands a great deal of research and frequent churning of the portfolio thus resulting in higher operational costs. Since passive management simply entails mimicking the benchmark, the costs involved in managing such funds is minimal. Does Passive management in India make sense? In India investors have a limited choice when it comes to investing in passively managed funds. Also investments only in passive funds might not help investors achieve the necessary portfolio diversification. Similarly, when it comes to Corporate Bond Market, it is shallow due to structural challenges like poor accessibility, lack of transparency and awareness. Bond ETFs can tide over these challenges and can play an important role in increasing retail investor participation. Like Equity ETFs, Bond ETFs closely track the index allowing investors to buy or sell while investing in Fixed Income securities. To conclude activity in the passive segment is currently dominated by institutions with very little participation from HNIs and retail investors. This needs to change with more retail participation. Rather than making this a debate between active and passive, I think we can celebrate the fact that the market is expanding. Simply put the pie is becoming bigger as more and more Indians are choosing to invest their savings in financial assets. So instead of active versus passive, let our portfolios be a mix of active and passive which will help us sail comfortably against market tides. If the pie gets bigger, then there’s more for everyone.

It was a rainy afternoon, but Prateek Dwivedi, 23, was sure he would catch his flight to Kerala on time. A PhD student from IIT Kanpur, Dwivedi decided to take an Ola cab much in advance, but could not reach the airport on time. The flight was gone, but Ola-Acko trip insurance for Re 1 premium that he usually buys for all his cab rides saved his day. The insurance not only covers missed flights but also loss of baggage, accidental medical expense, accidental death benefit and ambulance transportation cover, among others. “I sent in a claim of Rs 4,000 online and uploaded my flight ticket and identity proof. The settlement process turned out to be quite seamless and I received the full amount.” Welcome to the world of bite-sized insurance where you can cover yourself against cycle theft, gym injury, marathon, malaria, damaged mobile, cyber fraud, home contents, pet insurance, credit insurance and even life insurance. These insurance can be bought for as little as Rs 20 a month to less than Rs 800 a year. Angel investor Vivek Gujral had never heard of dengue insurance when Rohan Kumar pitched him for his start-up Toffee Insurance. He could not say no. “Only recently, one of my acquaintances had got admitted in hospital due to dengue. An insurance of such kind would have helped him financially,” Gujral recalled. Toffee Insurance, Digit Insurance, Acko Insurance, Symbo and Mobikwik are some of players that have been offering such sachet insurance products. Most importantly, The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has been forthcoming in giving licences to these new players. Some such as Digit and Acko also provide traditional health and motor insurance policies. Digital savvy millennials seek do-it-yourself comfort and instant results of their actions. The very nature of insurance involving complex documents, tardy processes and paying money periodically for future eventuality has made insurance quite unpopular among them. Insurance tech start-ups have begun to change this perception. They identified the need gap that is attractive for not only under-insured consumers but also insurance companies. “There is a lot of mistrust in the industry. Insurance tech start-ups are helping overcome this challenge. When we talk about bite sized insurance products, it instantly ticks you because these are contextual. Terminologies are simple. Realisation is fast. So, you see the value of the product quickly,” Animesh Das, Head – Product Strategy, Acko General Insurance says. Vivek Chaturvedi, head of marketing and sales (online), Digit Insurance points out that people usually take protection measures such as hiring a security guard when on travel or buying a phone cover and screen guard to protect the new phone. “Why to invest money in buying a thick case and screen guard when for the lesser amount you can insure your phone and at the same time enjoy the touch and feel of the original design. Or, why to hire a guard when on travel when you can protect yourself against burglary for less than Rs 500,” he says. Product innovation and seamless process are integral to the rise of insure-tech start-ups. While some have licences to build and sell products such as Acko and Digit, others such as Toffee, Symbo and Mobikwik partner with traditional insurance firms to co-create and sell sachet products. There are platforms such as Policybazaar, Turtlemint and Coverfox that work as marketplaces. Product Innovation and Differentiation These are early days for sachet-sized products. Multiple players are offering similar products. “This segment is relatively new and companies are tinkering with product offerings. Customisation and simplification of product offerings and technology enablement (filing claims, verification, disbursement) will play a crucial role in differentiating various players in the market place,” says Ankur Pahwa, partner and national leader, e-commerce and consumer internet at EY India. Currently the focus is on health, appliances and travel insurance, but the scope is huge. One product that Acko is exploring is pay-as-you-go auto insurance where the user will be charged on either daily commute or mileage. “Since such products are available internationally, discussions are on with regulators to tweak the existing structure of a yearly model. As most cars are equipped with real-time tracking devices, fitting such bite-sized insurance would make sense for consumers and insurance companies from execution point of view,” Das of Acko says. Digit Insurance is experimenting with home content insurance realising the fact that people living on rent only want to protect their belongings and not the structure of the home. The company has sold 355 policies collecting premium of Rs 23 lakh since the product launch in February 2019. Symbo Insurance is going a step ahead to sell its products to corporates. The company sold its breast and cervical cancer product that it launched on Women’s day to 130 companies. “Employers can provide this cover to women employees and male employees can have it for women in their families. Either they can make it free or employees can buy it on a discount,” says Anik Jain, CEO, Symbo Insurance. Symbo will soon launch another set of products with focus on women health, fitness enthusiasts, students and micro entrepreneurs. A Singaporean firm had come up with broken heart insurance on Valentine’s Day. Chinese insurance firm ZhongAn offered “watching-football-drinking-too-much” insurance during football World Cup 2014. It had to roll back these products after regulator’s intervention. Kumar of Toffee wants to experiment with Tinder-date-gone-bad insurance that would cover restaurant bills and gift expenses or failed matrimonial discussion on matchmaking websites. However, he is quick to add that while such products are good to create buzz, ultimately insurance is a financial product and it must add financial value to consumers. Few industry players point out that such products are indeed filling a gap, but there are concerns of consumers being under insured. Customers must know that these products don’t replace the need for full-fledged insurance, says Kamesh Goyal, chairman, Digit Insurance. “ZhongAn is a case in point whose market capitalisation slumped drastically as commissions for distributors were quite high. Their own income they were focussed on. Investors finally realised that it is not a sustainable model,” he adds. Rohan of Toffee begs to differ. “Sustainability in the micro insurance space can only be driven via automation in processes including claims, thereby creating a low cost distribution model. ZhongAn’s expensive distribution cost model caused a drop in their performance. If insurance tech companies can find the right balance and a capital light model to innovate and distribute micro insurance products, the market potential is substantial,” he says. How insurers look at it Can bite-sized segment be a viable source of revenue for insurance firms? Insurance firms do see the potential but currently do not seek profits out of it. “The focus right now is not so much on profitability but helping individuals get introduced to a product and take certain benefits before they decide to opt for a full-fledged cover,” says Ashish Mehrotra, MD & CEO, Max Bupa. The insurer recently launched HospiCash product in association with Mobikwik. The product covers hospital expenses up to Rs 2,000 a day for up to 30 days in a year at an annual premium of Rs 135. Chaturvedi of Digit says bite-sized insurance products should not be examined on the basis of profit and loss. “The Idea is not to drive revenues but create an ecosystem where a buyer of a bite-sized product also buys traditional polices from you.” The bet in terms of policies sold is working in their favour. Max Bupa has been selling close to 100 HospiCash policies daily. Mobikwik has sold nearly 5 lakh policies so far collecting a premium of Rs 4 crore. Toffee Insurance has sold 1 lakh policies having premium of Rs 3 crore, while Digit Insurance has sold 2 lakh mobile insurance policies since the policy’s launch in June 2019. In India, investor community is bullish. Data from Tracxn shows funding in the insure-tech space has jumped from $91.89 million in 2018 to a whopping $252.36 so far in 2019. Coverfox, Policybazaar and Turtlemint are among five companies that have received funds this year. The underpenetrated insurance segment is ripe for disruption, and insure-tech players are striking the right cords. What sachet consumer products did for retail, sachet insurance products look set to deliver for the insurance segment.

A company has only one peerless role: chief executive officer. It’s the most powerful and sought-after title in business, more exciting, rewarding, and influential than any other. What the CEO controls—the company’s biggest moves—accounts for 45 percent of a company’s performance.1 Despite the luster of the role, serving as a CEO can be all-consuming, lonely, and stressful. Just three in five newly appointed CEOs live up to performance expectations in their first 18 months on the job.2 The high standards and broad expectations of directors, shareholders, customers, and employees create an environment of relentless scrutiny in which one move can dramatically make or derail an accomplished career. For all the scrutiny of the CEO’s role, though, little is solidly understood about what CEOs really do to excel. McKinsey’s longtime leader, Marvin Bower, considered the CEO’s job so specialized that he felt executives could prepare for the post only by holding it. Many of the CEOs we’ve worked with have expressed similar views. In their experience, even asking other CEOs how to approach the job doesn’t help, because suggestions vary greatly once they go beyond high-level advice such as “set the strategy,” “shape the culture,” and “get the right team.” Perhaps that’s not surprising—industry contexts differ, as do leadership preferences—but it illustrates that fellow CEOs don’t necessarily make reliable guides. To show which mindsets and practices are proven to make CEOs most effective, we studied performance data on thousands of CEOs and revisited our firsthand experience helping CEOs enhance their leadership approaches. Nor has academic and other research on the CEO’s role done much to illuminate how CEOs think and what they do to excel. For example, recent studies that detail how CEOs spend their time don’t show the difference between a good use of time and a bad one. Academic research also demonstrates that traits such as drive, resilience, and risk tolerance make CEOs more successful. This insight is helpful during a search for a new CEO, but it’s hardly one that sitting CEOs can use to improve their performance. Other research has tended to produce such findings as the observation that leaders are effective in some situations and ineffective in others—interesting, but less than instructive. With this article, we set out to show which mindsets and practices are proven to make CEOs most effective. It is the fruit of a long-running effort to study performance data on thousands of CEOs, revisit our firsthand experience helping CEOs enhance their leadership approaches, and extract a set of empirical, broadly applicable insights on how excellent CEOs think and act. We also offer a self-assessment guide to help CEOs (and CEO watchers, such as boards of directors) determine how closely they adhere to the mindsets and practices that are closely associated with superior CEO performance. Our hope is that all CEOs, new or long-tenured, can use these tools to better apply their scarce time and energy. A model for CEO excellence To answer the question, “What are the mindsets and practices of excellent CEOs?,” we started with the six main elements of the CEO’s job—elements touched on in virtually all literature about the role: setting the strategy, aligning the organization, leading the top team, working with the board, being the face of the company to external stakeholders, and managing one’s own time and energy. We then broke those down into 18 specific responsibilities that fall exclusively to the CEO. For example, setting a corporate strategy requires that the CEO make the final call on an overall vision, a set of strategic moves, and the allocation of capital. Focusing on those 18 responsibilities, we conducted extensive research to determine what mindsets and practices distinguish excellent CEOs. We mined our proprietary database on CEO performance, which is the largest of its kind, containing 25 years’ worth of data on 7,800 CEOs from 3,500 public companies across 70 countries and 24 industries. We also drew on what we’ve learned from helping hundreds of CEOs to excel, from preparing for the job and transitioning into it, through navigating difficult decisions and moments of truth, to handing their responsibilities over to a successor. The result of these efforts is a model for CEO excellence, which prescribes mindsets and practices that are especially likely to help CEOs succeed at their particular duties (Exhibit 1). What follows is a detailed look at these mindsets and practices. Although our findings are most relevant to CEOs of large public companies, owing to our research base, many will also apply to CEOs of other bodies, including private companies, public-sector organizations, and not-for-profit institutions.

The Present is the Future of the Past An irony of studying history is that we often know exactly how a story ends, but have no idea where it began. Here’s an example. What caused the financial crisis? Well, you have to understand the mortgage market. What shaped the mortgage market? Well, you have to understand the 30-year decline in interest rates that preceded it. What caused falling interest rates? Well, you have to understand the inflation of the 1970s. What caused that inflation? Well, you have to understand the monetary system of the 1970s and the hangover effects from the Vietnam War. What caused the Vietnam War? Well, you have to understand the West’s fear of communism after World War II … And so on endlessly. Every current event – big or small – has parents, grandparents, great grandparents, siblings, and cousins. Ignoring that family tree can muddy your understanding of events, giving a false impression of why things happened, how long they might last, and under what circumstances they might happen again. Viewing events in isolation, without an appreciation for their long roots, helps explain everything from why forecasting is hard to why politics is nasty. Those roots can snake back infinitely. But The ultimate of those great-grandmother events was World War II. It’s hard to overstate how much the world reset from 1939 to 1945, and how deeply the changes the war left behind went on to define virtually everything that’s happened since. Right from the existence of Penicillin to radar, jets, nuclear energy, rockets, and helicopters. Subsidized consumption with consumer credit and tax-deductible interest contruction of highways to evacuate cities and mobilize the military in case of a nuclear bomb attack during the Cold War, to the internet, to theCivil Rights movement , to the growth in thefemale labor force by 6.5 million during the war because women were needed in factories. It’s probably the single most important economic event of our lifetime. Find something that’s important to you in 2019 – social, political, economic, whatever – and with a little effort you can trace the roots of its importance back to World War II. There are so few exceptions to this rule it’s astounding. Which raises the question: What else is like World War II? What are the other Big Things – the great-grandparents – of important topics today that we need to study if we want to understand what’s happening in the world? Nothing is as influential as World War II has been. But there are a few other Big Things worth paying attention to, because they’re the root influencer of so many other topics. The three big ones that stick out are demographics, inequality, and access to information. Each of these Big Things will have a profound impact on the coming decades because they’re both transformational and ubiquitous. They impact nearly everyone, albeit in different ways. No one in 1945 knew exactly how World War II would go on to shape the world, only that it would in extreme ways. But we can guess some of the likeliest changes. A demographic shift that reconfigures modern economies. Here’s what’s happening: Source: Census Bureau In 1960 there were three times as many Americans age 0-4 as age 70-74. By 2060 those groups are about even. The share of young workers is declining. The share of older workers is rising. The share of retired people – or those in retirement age – is surging. There have been about 100 billion humans born during the 200,000 years we’ve existed. For practically all of that time, making more people wasn’t an issue. Keeping them alive is another story. But having lots of babies has been a fundamental part of humanity for tens of thousands of years. This is more than biological; there’s a strong cultural element to reproducing. The baby boom of the 1940s and 1950s was an aberration, and the economic boom that ensued led to a predictable trend: there is a long history of women having fewer children as they get richer. Part of this is that rich countries have better healthcare, so more kids survive into adulthood. Fewer babies while everyone else lives longer is a Big Thing, because it means the population ages. And when the population ages everything from economic growth to workplace culture to the global order of nations gets shaken up When people talk about what nation will own the next century they point to leadership in AI and Machine Learning, where China looks so competitive. But it’s staggeringly hard to grow an economy when you lose a fifth of your working-age population in a single generation. China could invent something as big as the next internet, but when mixed with its demographics have an economy that muddles along. Europe, Japan, and South Korea are the same or worse. People like to talk about new technologies and innovations, because that’s fun. Demographics aren’t fun. But they’re going to be as important, if not more, to overall economic growth than most innovations over the coming decades. Another thing affected by demographics: Fewer births means more reliance on immigration for population growth. The year 1920 was a big year for immigration. The end of World War I reshuffled global migration. Just over 800,000 people immigrated to the United States that year. But 2,950,000 people were born in America that year. So the ratio of new residents skewed toward American-born citizens over immigrants. America was built by immigrants, who have shown to be more entrepreneurial and better educated – immigrants are 13% of the population but 27.5% of entrepreneurs. America’s major immigration boom took place in the late 19th and early 20th century. The coming decades could see a lower rate of immigration but with just as great effect, since the proportion of new citizens is magnified by a lower domestic birth rate. Wealth inequality that’s grown for four decades hits an inevitable breaking point. Inequality is one of the most divisive topics that exists, because it pits capitalism against fairness in ways that feel zero sum – me vs. you, your gain is my loss, etc. It’s tribal in nature, and tribal debates can escalate into fights because you feel like your identity and dignity are on the line. But in this story it doesn’t matter whether you think inequality is right or wrong, good or bad, or what we should do about it. Someone else can tackle those topics. All that matters here is that it happened, and happened enormously. It’s a Big Thing that impacts all kinds of other topics. I point this out to show that things turned out OK. They did just fine. But a revolution it was. Top income tax rates went from effectively 0% to 94% inside of three decades. The most important thing about this topic is that people don’t judge their wellbeing in a vacuum. They measure their worth relative to the people they see around them. If your income stays the same while people around you see their income rise 10%, you will likely feel worse off. This is usually subtle, as the material possessions of those with more money inflate your aspirations, often taunting you to close the gap between you and them by taking on debt. The point is that we can’t just look at how rich the top has become, or at how stagnant the bottom is. It’s the gap between the two that causes one group to push back against the other. And that gap is the highest it’s been in almost a century, if not ever. We’ll come up with all kinds of explanations for why these things changed. But the most likely is that income inequality of the early 2000s was a Big Thing that guided the subsequent decades, as it has for centuries. Access to information closes gaps that used to create a social shield of ignorance. Carole Cole disappeared in 1970 after running away from a juvenile detention center in Texas. She was 17. A year later an unidentified murdered body was found in Louisiana. It was Carole, but Louisiana police had no idea. They couldn’t identify her. Carole’s disappearance went cold, as did the unidentified body. Thirty-four years later Carole’s sister posted messages on Craigslist asking for clues into her sister’s disappearance. At nearly the same time, a sheriff’s department in Louisiana made a Facebook page asking for help identifying the Jane Doe body found 34 years before. Six days later, someone connected the dots between the two posts. What stumped detectives for almost four decades was solved by Facebook and Craigslist in less than a week. This kind of stuff didn’t happen even 10 years ago. And we probably haven’t awoken to its full potential – good and bad. The greatest innovation of the last generation has been the destruction of information barriers that used to keep strangers isolated from one another. What’s happened over the last 20 years – and especially the last 10 – has no historical precedent. The telephone eliminated the information gap between you and a distant relative, but the internet has closed the gap between you and literally every stranger in the world. It’s a Big Thing. Perhaps the biggest thing since World War II. It’s so big that I don’t think anyone has a clue where it will lead. But let me argue a few points. TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington recently wrote: “I thought Twitter was driving us apart, but I’m slowly starting to think half of you always hated the other half but never knew it until Twitter.” This is a good point that highlights something easy to overlook: 1) everyone belongs to a tribe, 2) those tribes sometimes fundamentally disagree with one another, 3) that’s fine if those tribes keep their distance, 4) the internet increasingly assures that they don’t. Opening your mind to different perspectives is good and necessary. But when fundamental, unshakable views that used to be contained within tribes expose themselves to different tribes, people become shocked to learn that what’s sacred to them isn’t always a universal truth. The range of political opinions has always been extreme, but what we’ve seen over the last decade is what happens when the warm blanket of ideological ignorance is removed. Another shift is the push toward meritocracy. People who have never had a voice can, practically overnight, have the biggest. The pseudonymous blogger Jesse Livermore provides more intelligent investing analysis than entire departments at top-tier investment banks can publish. Nick Maggiulli was unknown two years ago and had never worked in finance; now his investment articles gain more attention than most major news organizations. In effect, credentialism is melting away. I don’t care who you are or what your job title is. If you have a good idea, I want to hear it. Of course the flip side of this is dangerous, as the maniac shouting the loudest often gets the attention. A third shift is that it is now harder to hide behind, yet easier to spread, false and misleading information. I don’t know how to reconcile that contradiction, but you see both everywhere. Customer reviews can accomplish what the Better Business Bureau never could, but fake reviews pose a challenge that didn’t exist two decades ago. At the same time, spam mail exists because it works. Maybe the internet makes us better informed yet more gullible. Distinguishing the two is hard. Influence existing at the extreme poles of truth and fiction is most of what makes the internet a Big Thing. You could continue on this topic endlessly. The question of the rules of how a presidential campaign works when both candidates had social media in high school, when everyone posts stuff they’ll later regret, will be fascinating to watch being answered – equal parts inspirational and terrifying. The world is driven by tail events. A minority of things drive the majority of outcomes. It’s one of the most important concepts in investing, where a few positions may account for most of your lifetime returns. History is no different. World War II, World War I, and the Great Depression influenced nearly every important event of the 20th century. Industrialization and the Civil War did the same in the 19th. Demographics, inequality, and information access will have a huge impact on the coming decades. How those Big Things end is a story yet to be told. But when it’s told we’ll have a better idea of where it began.
