Its planners assumed that private initiative and corporate control could replace public goods: if you can buy your own power backup, who needs a reliable grid? If every complex can hire its own water tankers, why invest in groundwater recharge? If every enclave has its own private security, why build policing as a civic trust? The result is a geography of islands—self-contained fortresses where comfort is commodified, surrounded by seas of dysfunction.The paradox is stark: Gurugram generates some of India’s highest revenues from real estate and corporate hubs, yet lacks the skeletal basics of drainage, roads, and public transport. It is Atlantis without the poetry – an urban myth realised in steel and smog, destined to sink not into the ocean but into its own contradictions. The flood is not an act of divine punishment but a mirror held up to a city designed without memory, without humility, without regard for the ground it stands on.And when the waters recede, the city will go back to its routines of consumption and aspiration, until the next monsoon reminds its residents – again – that Atlantis is not just a parable of the past.
